They can do more outside a ticket office such as actually assisting customers on the concourse. Not worked that well at my local tube station where staff tend to hide away in the corner talking amongst themselves. On Saturday they never even challenged a group going through the wide barrier without touching out. At my local tube station, the staff are always quite helpful but it does raise questions when they have to help ask passengers for spare change/pay with their contactless card to help someone at the TVM. It's all quite sad really that they can't do it themselves which they would've been able to if they had full ticket office capabilities.
* this would largely be solved if ticket machines constantly gave change, always accepted notes and coins, etc... etc...
There must've been staff savings quite clearly on LU at least though with the ticket offices closing. I felt quite bad when asking for the only staff member at the gateline at Waterloo (his colleague had to attend to a passenger in need) to help link my Railcard to my Oyster Card at the machine as he was inundated with questions by passengers and the usual at any busy station.

Definitely a hopeful sign, but there is still some way to go on reaching a deal. Also ASLEF are still in dispute with several Train Operating Companies.

Aslef have called for further strikes & overtime ban, but in a different format than before by grouping TOC’s on different days as follows;
Drivers to not sign on the dates below for the TOC they work at 0001 - 2359
Saturday 2nd December * LNER * East Midlands Railway
Sunday 3rd December * Avanti West Coast * West Midlands Railway / London North Western Railway * Chiltern Railways * Thameslink / Great Northern
Tuesday 5th December * Greater Anglia * C2C
Wednesday 6th December * South Western Railway / Island Line * Southern / Gatwick Express * Southeastern
Thursday 7th December * Great Western Railway * Cross Country
Friday 8th December * Transpennine Trains * Northern Trains
0001 - Friday 1st December until 2359 Saturday 9th December - All TOC’s on overtime ban
The way this is being done this time is interesting as it groups areas where TOC’s run alongside or connect with each other
* Added missing dates from original post *

I have seen totally different TOCs on different days.
