I don't normally contribute to transport forums during the week. I just felt like seeing you all on my birthday! I shall be back with you on the transport threads on Saturday 25th after I say Yellow to the franchised bus network in Bolton. Have fun in the meantime! I bet you are 21 again! Have a great day!

Not sure how closely this fits the "Leadership Crisis" brief, but it is related to the latest Cabinet reshuffle which has been rather overshadowed by the sacking of Suella Braverman. Guy Opperman, MP for Hexham, Northumberland since 2010, has been appointed Under-Secretary of State for Transport and taken on responsibility as minister for coach and bus as part of the roads and local transport brief. He reports to Mark Harper, the Transport Secretary, with whom he has worked previously when Mr Harper was Immigration Secretary. Mr Opperman succeeds Richard Holden, who in a surprise move has been promoted to Chair of the Conservative Party. He had responsibility for the bus and coach brief for little over a year, having succeeded Baroness Vere in October 2022. Mr Holden was widely regarded positively in the industry and was seen as approachable, it remains to be seen how his successor will be viewed. Mr Opperman once described himself as being "rather on the left" of the Conservative Party. Fun fact - he is an amateur jockey. www.route-one.net/news/guy-opperman-mp-gets-coach-and-bus-minister-brief/

It reminds me of the X Factor. So sad seeing Rishi fail and not go through to the next round after Judges Houses. I guess his colleagues are all in the same boat with disappointment New "Elected Leader" branding shows that Rishi should still be respected, despite having no mandate (unlike Boris)... They say the "spark logo" represents the dynamism in his policies and direction

Thank you all for your birthday wishes. I did notice myself included in the list of birthdays then.
Some of you will know that my knowledge goes back to the final years of London Transport running the whole network in-house. I shall now give a clue as to my real age. My first exciting memory of London buses aged 21 was on November 28th, on a day of the week that will come as no surprise to some of you! Anyway, my surprise was seeing the mass influx of Metrobuses and Titans on routes in the Wood Green area. This was the first time I'd seen both types together in the same place.
And yes, I know, I haven't changed a bit since I was 21 !!!
I shall come back to this thread with the relevant subject of politics.

Suella Braverman has not so far gone quietly, criticising the immigration figures as though she had not been Home Secretary for the past year.
Some Brexiteers seem to dislike David Cameron. I don't see the need. While he did speak for the government he was leading by campaigning for Remain (albeit on revised terms), they seem to forget that he was the facilitator of Brexit through having promised and held the referendum in the first place.

Apparently the flights to Rwanda have been put back so often that the migrants are eligible for delay compensation.

Interesting article, thanks for sharing... If there is to be a change in Prime Minister is your preference that a) it's decided by the Parliamentary Conservative Party? b) Decided by the Conservative Party Membership?

I can't see Sunak being ousted in a way that the Daily Fail seems to be suggesting. The Tories are seemingly on the road to losing the election regardless now so it would be foolish to install a new leader that you think might be popular with the public to potentially still lose an election and be forced to resign when you could just see the loss with the already unpopular prime minister and then replace him with someone more suitable while in opposition to then win the election afterwards. I feel Sunak himself will potentially call the election early if he loses Tuesday's vote. I don't think he'll put it off until the end of next year as that could potentially lead to an even worse loss than what's predicted at the moment.

Speculation has increased about a General Election in May. I think May if Rishi envisages a coup to overthrow him, otherwise October.

The media are now talking up November 14th rather than October 24th as the Autumn election date if it happens then rather than May.
Admittedly, November would not "interfere" with my likely Warrington bus trip on Saturday October 26th. It would also mean the Friday of the election coverage would be my birthday, as well as the election itself being on King Charles' birthday!

Security officials (MI5 I believe) have warned in the past few months of the UK having its election so soon with the US in the first week of November. I'm willing to stake claim that it'll be late October just after half term or in early December. There won't ever be an election held that willingly jeopardises national security. Props to you though for wanting to gift yourself the right to vote on your birthday. Reckon I can find 100 people who'll say they couldn't think of a worse present!!
