Walton Gardens is indeed still there although ive never seen it used by the 117. Likewise for the Dog and Partridge. I went past Ashford Common recently. The schedule on the old 290 had daily short runs there. I looked and I don’t think a bus would make the left turn off the A308 anymore. Too many parked cars. Ashford & Sunbury Stations also had bus stands - as well as Stanies Station which saw some scheduled turns on the 441 I think… now just used by the Thorpe Park express. Agreed, not a chance a bus would make the Ashford Common turn to head to the old stand anymore. In fact, the Lower Feltham turn would also probably be quite tight from memory. Interesting about the Sunbury Station stand. Which side was it on? The car park side I couldn’t imagine being suitable and the other side (Downside) would probably have access issues, although maybe not so much back in the day as I believe it was more offices than residential. I’ve been trying to find evidence of what side it was. The 290 had a random trip on Sat pm which terminated at Sunbury Old Hanworth Road (the SSS gears bus stop) Which actually was Sunbury Cross, suppose they didn’t describe it as such as this trip went around the roundabout and went back to Fulwell Garage via A316. Sunbury Station had regular trips on the 216 up to the early 80’s so must have had a stand down Station Road somewhere. No room for them to have stood anywhere on Green Street.

The Red RF website records that the Sunbury terminus on the 216 moved from Sunbury Village to Station in 1951, but does not say where it turned / stood.
Looking at the current road layout, I can't see where buses could turn on Station Road without doing a 3 (or more) point turn, which OPO buses tended not to do.
Although the road layout could have changed since 216 terminated there. (The current route records allow a turn by going right round the roundabout, but as a turning point without a stand.)

This picture (not mine) came up on Flickr yesterday - the stand at Shepherds Bush Green, Caxton Road.
I understand it is / was on LT property as part of the White City Underground depot complex.
The gate still (on June 2022 Street View) has a 'no entry except buses' sign, but it looks as though it's now a goods access to Westfield shopping centre - presume it's not a bus stand any more?

Yes it went around the mid 2000s in the run up to the building of Westfield and the eventful movement of all the routes to White City Bus Station. I believe the routes used to stand around the Green during the building works. There was no 31 and C1 at the time and the 148 stood in S.

Out in LT green bus territory I have been trying to confirm what happened to the 441s at Hedgerley Hill. The full variant went down the hill to Hedgerley Village and reversed around a corner into Kiln Lane by the pub to stand facing back towards Staines. The current (very minimal) service runs around the block at Hedgerley Hill but the 441 I believe turned at the top using the conductor as banksman as happened down the hill.
Options for the 441 were, as I see it, to reverse into Stevenson Road, to reverse into Gregory Road, to turn into Gregory Road and reverse into Coppice Way or to go around the block as now via Jones Way. Can anyone confirm which move applied?
Another curious terminal in that neck of the woods was Pinewood Studios served only (so far as the general public were concerned) by a couple of trips on the 457C and 457D. There is still a country-area wooden shelter at the Pinewood bus stop which had a semi-circle of road at the main studio entrance for turning. There are still regular private buses to surrounding towns.

The Limehouse, Burdett Road, stand. This was the regular terminus for the 86 until September 1982 when the route was cut back to Stratford, although it returned there from April 1983 until October 1984 and a Sunday service persisted until May 1991. The stand was also used by the 395 Rotherhithe Tunnel minibus route from October 1999 until 28th April 2006, after which the route was withdrawn without replacement. The stand is substantial, and the 395 minibuses always looked a little lost in there. The stand is still available for curtailments. From the dim and distant past I recall the 86 blinded to "Limehouse - Londoner" - assume that this refers to a long-gone pub - wonder if this is linked to the Burdett Road stand...? The Londoner at Limehouse was previously the Eastern Hotel which name also appeared on blinds of the day. The 86 and others which terminated there at one time did so by U-turning in the width of the carriageway in West India Dock Road. The Burdett Road stand was considerably enlarged during the 1980s iirc but the 86 beyond Stratford became increasingly unreliable and infrequent. The 395 was preceded by the P14 which used small Metroriders through the Rotherhithe Tunnel but even those would be too large for today's restrictions. Buses cannot pass through. It was never a busy route even when crew-worked RTLs (and latterly RTs)on the 82 were the offering.

If that’s at the junction of Burdett Rd & the A13 for a short time in the 80s the 278 terminated there before it was withdrawn from east London.

IIRC it was the 278 which replaced the Limehouse extension of the 86 converting it from crewed Routemasters to omo Leyland Nationals. The 278 must have been one of the most-altered routes during its time out east.

Remember it in it’s pomp as a trolleybus replacement route Victoria & Albert Docks to Chingford Mount.

It still had Leyland Nationals for a short time then in converted to MRL minibuses before it's withdrawal in 1993.

The 278 (which was V&A Docks to Walthamstow Central when I first knew it) has been more of a football than most other routes. Chopped, kicked around and changed so often perhaps hoping to make it useful. We only used it when the 241 didn't turn up to the Docks because it was "the long way round" to Stratford not actually getting into the centre there at all but turning north at Maryland Point. Over a few years the northern terminus was Chingford Station, Walthamstow Central, Leyton Grange Park Road, Walthamstow again, Chingford Mount, Stoke Newington, Limehouse, Aldgate, Limehouse ..... and so on.

In the mid 60s even though it was an RM route used to see the odd RTL in the early morning chugging along Hoe St towards Chingford.
