Just wondering if any members have a Ford EcoBoost or should I say EcoBoom 😜 engine?
Recently changed my car and really unsure if I am going to get on with this car. The 1.0 engine is very nippy around town but struggles on high speed roads. I also can’t get used to the much longer gear changes! You can be up over 30 still in second gear.

I've never owned one but in general with cars I tend to go for no less than 1.4 units with good bhp/torque as they can be almost as economical and can deal with the motorway that bit better. With my ratio of city and motorway driving (75 to 25 respectively) I find a 1.6 petrol on average an ideal compromise.

Not exactly relevant but in terms of economical majority of Uber drivers use the Hybrid Prius.

Not a EcoBoost, but my parents do own a 64reg Automatic Fiesta with an older 1.6 Duratec engine that essentially got replaced by the EcoBoost engines shortly after, the 1.6 engine itself is pretty good on the motorways and most hilly areas across the British countryside and we haven't had too many problems with that other than it does drink too much fuel in towns for something like a Fiesta, though that's more down to being a 1.6 automatic and a lot of the London traffic in general.

Think it's a general issue with Autos where they guzzle fuel when in stop start traffic because they drop down to lower gears just as easily. I've got a 1.6L manual and the fuel lasts forever depending in the driving, although I'm often pushing the limits on how high I can get my gears for the slowest speed before I'm forced to go down in order to keep the rev limit low, things like pulling off in second when you have the ability to massively help with fuel economy but wouldn't naturally happen in an automatic car as it works its way up from 1 each time.

It's geared long for fuel economy, just takes a little getting used to is it a 5 or 6 speed? if it's a 5 then 3rd is fine for 30, 4th will struggle a bit, I had one and did over 30,000 miles in it mostly on the motorway, it's not that bad, I recently drove an MG ZS with a 1.5 naturally aspirated engine and trust me, that is a slow car that should be restricted to local roads only I currently drive a 1.5 diesel Fiesta and it also has long gears to the point it's really unhappy if you drive at 30 in 4th, but for longer journeys, it's lovely, and can get over 60MPG on a long run

As a one time curiosity i pulled off in third on the downhill gradient on Streatham Common North side with the junction of Valley Road, allowing a bit of momentum before releasing the clutch. I was quite impressed at how smooth my 1.8 manual continued, making me wished I had tried it there with more momentum in fourth. Like you I also would do second gear start offs whenever plausible, which my driving instructor of the time even recommends on certain down gradients (then to my suprise).

I had driven a 1.03 Ecoboost Fiesta in 2018 for a few days as a courtesy car. It was very nippy, liked it, never had any problem with high speed driving at all. It had good low torque so could change gears early also. I would be at 5th gear in 30 or even 6th if I did not have to power off.

The car I’m driving is the opposite so you need to stay in lower gears much longer, you can easily be over 30 in second. The car runs better if you try match the speed to the gear so third at 30, fourth at 40. But agree the engine is very moot and you could easily pick up a few speeding tickets if not careful.

I had one as a courtesy car, in a Focus, but I thrashed the car like a Streetdeck bus driver and it didn't like me I was a field engineer driving all across the Shires and Essex on short SLA's (Service Level Agreements or response times), I think the engine was too small for the car, the turbo spools up quick but the engine has to work hard. Like any incoming Spurs manager, there was a lot to do to get things moving

To stop people buying unmarked cars at auction after use they started drilling the engine block to deliberately trash it. (BTW Authority Spec cars are below most poverty spec cars with cloth seats) The latest unit, the B57 is a great all rounder too, they fixed the turbo / camshaft issues, I have this unit in my X5. Great on the open road though on smaller country lanes feels like driving a double decker on the 394 as cars have grown somewhat The worst Ford engine I've experienced was the DuraTorq diesel 1.5 in a long wheelbase Transit Connect. As underpowered as a Streetdeck on the 123, the 75bhp unit takes a lot of encouragement to get going. I've never agreed with the tiny engine / big vehicle thing as you use more fuel than in a more suitably matched car, like anything over a 1.8 if petrol

As long as they are serviced (Oil change and Oil Filter) regularly and Timing belt changed before the recommended interval , I believe the Ecoboost has a wet belt so similar to a chain but a belt ? ( I had a Clio years ago and the belt snapped and ever since only ever bought cars with a Timing Chain ) and all the normal wear and tear bits I think it should be fine , however if it's a earlier model from around 2011/2012 they do have a few problems . If it is a Fiesta though one thing I would say is 100% get yourself a Steering Wheel lock as all I see on FB day in and day out is Fiestas beimh stolen due to keyless theft .
