Could they make a proper terminal outside the garage where buses can safely make a U turn like at Waterloo for the 139/341 with a traffic light to hold back all the traffic?

Probably not worthwhile for one route and buses often do U-turns now during lulls in traffic. I think it's a shame that the 171 can't be extended to Bromley replacing the 320 but stand space is the problem.

Yeah, it's usually used for the W5, C11 and 143 iirc to get to their stands and 4, 17 and 390 to begin their journeys into Central London

Something tells me the 171 will probably be addressed in this Lewisham/Catford consultation then.

I wonder if this will just involve the 171 or if time the 47 and 199 will not be able to stand in forecourt and will also have to stand on the road.

Is it really ever that deep? So if you needed to go somewhere and your only way of reaching there was an electric 199, would you rather walk just to avoid a type of bus? Tbh with you I would just take an Electric if needed but with LTs it is a no way whatever happens, I would walk if possible or use an Uber worst case scenario. Bear in mind the whole network across cities are going Electric (Globally, not just London) so sooner rather than later I will need to use them whether I like or not. The way I look at it atm, if there is the option of using a Diesel or Hybrid why not utilise as they are reaching the end of the road. You won't like this then :
Uber has announced plans for all its London cab drivers to use electric cars by the end of 2025 in an ambitious move that would make the UK city the ride-hailing firm's first all-electric location.

I've often thought that it would be more useful for the 171 to follow the N171 to Hither Green instead. It seems daft to run all the way to Downham and back out of service, so I wouldn't be surprised if it fell back to Catford Town Centre eventually. I agree I have said in the past since the 171 was curtailed to Elephant & Castle that it would make sense to divert the entire service via Hither Green and replacing them part of the 181. 284 diverted to Lower Sydenham and double decked. 225 diverted via Ladywell to Bellingham replacing the 284

Possible - although would have thought the 171 gets a reasonable number of passengers getting to / from the Catford railway stations from the Bromley Road direction.
And at the moment I'm not sure where they would find for a stand for buses coming from the Brockley direction, although this may change if the latest plans for the South Circular actually happen (pardon my cynicism, but I've seen plans come and go for quite a long time, including the ones that led to the whole 'Catford Island' being derelict for ages.)

Will this be the turn around the 181 used to use when it terminated at Downham?
I think the 47 used it for a few years aswell.

I suspect TfL would rather not spend money on something like this but the 63 is the only route to U-turn at Honor Oak

Yes, the southern terminus of the 47 was Downham Way / Bromley Road from April 1985 (when the Bromley end became the OPO 47A) until October 1986 - although it was fairly common for crews to try and 'get a turn' at Catford Garage. Other than 'turns' and possibly a few scheduled journeys, it had been the terminus for most journeys on the night 285 / N85 from tram replacement days.
At that time, buses stood on the western leg of Downham Way, at the side of Woolworths (now Iceland) - I can't remember whether they went in via the north or south leg of Old Bromley Road (the south end would have meant setting passengers down closer to the shops round the junction.) The marked stand is now on the southern leg of Old Bromley Road, just past the former 'Garden Gate' pub (now McDonalds.)
The 181 terminated at Downham from 1994 - 2006 (not sure if the change in 1994 was for a traffic objective, or whether there was reluctance to let Kentishbus vehicles turn at Catford Garage yard where it had terminated before being tendered.) I was away from London for much of that time, and not sure I know what the turn / stand arrangements were then.

I'm pretty sure the 181 terminus was moved from TL to Downham because of Kentish Bus taking over the route. I did hear a suggestion that the subsequent extension to Grove Park was because of residents complaints about the Downham stand?

The 171 picks up higher numbers of passengers from the Lewisham Town Hall Stop. If it was diverted via the 181 to Lewisham for example would be quite useful as many board buses on Sandhurst Road area and wait for the 171 at Catford. Most people waiting for buses on Bromley Road are heading in the direction of Lewisham. I doubt a stand would be specifically created for the 171 in the town centre very limited space around even with the consultation out now. Would involve spending more money on it that is not going to happen. If the 171 remains in its current form I would not be surprised if it goes to Stagecoach in 2025.

Maybe I’m missing something but is there anything particularly special about diesels nowadays? Diesels in the 20th century and early 21st century were vastly more interesting, nowadays they seem relatively bland anyway.
