Well meaning idea from Rishi Sunak but I'm not sure how it will work in practice, years from now will we have 35 year olds asking 36 year olds to go in the shop for them? Eventually smoking will die out of it's own accord, out of the people I know very few of them smoke.

Same as they do now

Imagine the logistics of shops having to remember and challenge people of a different age each year.
Will signage have to be displayed and updated each year? I can imagine in years to come some people being a bit miffed about being challenged to buy cigarettes.

I would imagine signage would just say you need to be born before xx/xx/xxxx instead of requiring a sign to be changed every year.

I would imagine signage would just say you need to be born before xx/xx/xxxx instead of requiring a sign to be changed every year. Indeed & this is already a thing when it comes to till staff handling such a purchase - a prompt comes up showing what year you need to born before a transaction can go through (or not if they're underage) It should also be noted that supermarkets already follow things like Challenge 18, 21 & 25 when it comes to age related purchases - using cigarettes here, we don't sell them but they'd likely come under a challenge 21 scenario where if the person looks younger than 21, ID should be asked for just to give some leeway. I've been asked for ID as far as up to 30 when I've brought cigarettes for a family member so I don't think it will be that big an issue.
