Jeremy Corbyn has confirmed that he will contest Islington North as an independent candidate. He has held the seat for over 40 years as a Labour MP, but was expelled from the party following remarks made after the Equalities Watchdog report into antisemitism in the party. The journalist Paul Mason and the transport writer Christian Wolmar both expressed interest in standing as the Labour candidate, but have not been selected. The shortlist is two local Islington councillors (the best response to their names is "who?"). www.theguardian.com/politics/article/2024/may/24/jeremy-corbyn-to-stand-as-independent-at-general-election-islington-northIt does not surprise me with Starmer, he did this before with two South East candidates who should have been up for MP and prevented them from being MP

Both parties seem to have announced interesting pledges today. The Tories want to introduce mandatory national service for 18 year olds while the Labour Party wants to lower the voting age to 16. Notably extrapolation does show that if under 16s get the vote, should they all turn up to poll that it could see the Tories out of government permanently. Conservatives want to bring back mandatory national serviceTwelve months of mandatory national service would be reintroduced by the Conservatives if they win the general election.www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/cpddxy9r4mdoThat should be mandatory, but not enforced.

I see Farage was on Sky News earlier today whipping out the old Project Fear nonsense again - just reinforces what I've said about Reform several times on here, a bunch of racists and conspiracy theorists. If there is one party people shouldn't be touching with a barge pole, it's that one

If there is one party people shouldn't be touching with a barge pole, it's that one I'd be amazed if they won a seat. Even Lee Anderson I doubt will retain his seat.

If there is one party people shouldn't be touching with a barge pole, it's that one Farage is given way too much air time and his nonsense is not robustly challenged in the same way other politicians are challenged. He is a complete fraud and nothing more than a single-issue lobbyist.

Reform (UKIP/Brexit) which morphed into the 2019 Conservative Party and the rest of the Tufton Street mafia have been and gone, since they stiffed the country over Brexit and the straw that broke the camels back was Truss with her unfunded tax cuts that were backed by Taxpayers Alliance (Tufton Street.
So you can stick the dreadful racist Reform party with Livingstone's bendy buses in room 101.

What are the chances of the Labour government restoring the HS2 link back to Manchester? Not high but not zero In the words of Chris Tarrant on Who Wants To Be A Millionaire, "fifty-fifty out of two of them" I am also a huge Millionaire fan, and this comes from a 2008 episode when a really useless phone-a-friend said that he was "fifty-fifty" sure on the answer... when 50:50 had already been used!

Interesting that quite a few Labour MPs have stood down aswell this time. You'd have thought they would like to atleast live on to see the Party in power then go at a later date.

If Diane Abbott was to stand as an independent I don't think her chances would be as high as Jeremy Corbyns could be at winning.

Being in Government is tough, and this next Parliament will be more challenging than most. Apart from the ones who had decided that were retiring some time ago, these three have their own personal reasons for deciding this is the time to step away. One has worsening ill-health; another has young children and is married to another MP who intends to continue serving.
