Same thing happened to Al Gore in 2000, he won the popular vote but lost on the electoral college vote. But either way the electoral college is a joke of a system and only the will of the people should matter. It effectively renders the general public vote useless if the college voters don’t agree with their states popular vote. But you’re right, those Americans who voted for the Trump abomination deserve everything they get. It's essentially the same as the FPTP system in the UK, in that votes are only effective to the national outcome if conducted in the right place, ie a swing state or seat. Although of course, there has only been two post-war examples of a party winning more votes than seats in UK (1951 and Feb 1974) It’s more complicated than a simple FPTP system. The voters within the college don’t have to go with the popular vote, they can go either way.

The US system makes our own political system look sensible in comparison.
Good luck world, your on fire and now your potentially going to see petrol poured over you rather than water. As others have said, they've made their bed so they go lie in it - just a shame we'll still have to deal with the US regardless due to being allies and special relationship, etc

I was not expecting to get up this morning and see Trump giving a victory speech and then going off stage to YMCA playing. I dread to think what the next 4 years will be like. People said the same in 2016 and was it really that bad? I think he had a few rather shambolic gaffs at the height of the COVID outbreak. Do we really want someone as unstable as Trump in power with so much unrest in the world at the moment.

Exactly, the constant smear campaign against Donald Trump didn't work and he's been returned to office seemingly by a sizeable majority despite the polls saying it was too close to call etc.

I think there is a lot of bad feeling and worry about the result of the election probably more so this time after seeing what Donald Trump is like in power. For me MKAY315 said it perfectly tangytango.proboards.com/post/844779/thread

The major difference is that the majority of the stories being reported internationally were the negative ones against Trump. There were various stories on how Harris was a poor policy maker or ones going on about her ethnicity and the “black” voice outlets like Fox kept claiming she was using. American politics is pure smears on both sides, make no mistake about that.

As with a lot of recent elections, this was one where I wanted both parties to lose. Unfortunately sometimes there has to be a winner. At least this one does not directly affect me! **EDIT** This Facebook post by British Poker player Liv Boree who now lives in the US just about somes up what is wrong with modern politics. www.facebook.com/share/p/15MjHHmuo6/

Going back to what I said earlier in this thread. With Trump returning back to the White house despite having a felon attached to him is going to seriously question the integrity of the American public nationwide. As if someone has had a criminal past and they try and run for president and they don't get it they could in theory turn around and say well Trump has one attached to him.
This is going to open up a whole heap of worms in the future.

You would not want to be part of that legal team that went after Trump, their careers are as good as finished.

Or they're probably highly sought after now as they had the guts to take on such a difficult case.
