It understand some work has already started moving utilities. Various works get going properly in 2009 to dig shafts etc for construction. One of the first parts to be finished will be the new Isle of Dogs station (under North dock, not where the Jubilee Line station is), they are draining the dock and digging down early 2009 to be finished structure by 2012. This will allow new buildings on North Dock (at end of footbridge to DLRs Poplar station) to be constructed. It will have to wait upto 5 years for the trains in 2017. There was a press release www.tfl.gov.uk/corporate/media/newscentre/10895.aspxThere was also a big article on crossrail in Modern Railways magazine a few months ago. Tunneling will start in 2010 (the TBMs should be built from mid-late 2009), in some cases they will pass through the already built platform tunnels which will be dug from the shafts first. Dates of the works on the existing surface lines, (longer platforms etc) will follow and may co-incide with normal engineering work on maintaining existing. It appears the Maidenhead-Reading option is currently a safeguarded route (can't do anything to make it harder), main problem is Rebuilding of Reading station including resignalling, but this will be done by 2017 (but wasn't due to be complete if crossrail had opened by 2012 as originally proposed). As there is now talk of Electrifying the mainline to Bristol/Cardiff, it would seem logical extension. There is a lot of info on crossrail site including detailed maps of everywhere (you need to look in the pdfs that were extra to parliamentary submission), takes some time as the index pages are not good for quickly picking items that are in the website

Work has started today (15th May) on the new station at North Dock by driving the first 18.5m long pile (out of nearly 300). In addition it has been announced the station will be called Canary Wharf (it was known as Isle of Dogs). The station box will be finished by Summer 2012 so that development above/adjacent can take place and the tunnel boring machines can pass through, trains will not serve it until 2017 so there is 5 years to fit it out. www.crossrailnews.co.uk/nav/news.php?id=5899www.crossrailnews.co.uk/nav/news.php?id=5898

Is this Canary Wharf close to the existing Jubilee and DLR Canary Wharf Stations? Thanks. Not that close, from the Jubilee line you need to cross Canada Square and pass the office blocks both sides of the square It is nearer Poplar and West India Quay DLR than Canary Wharf DLR

Isn't it Wonderful having 3 separate Canary Wharfs that are supposed to be part of an integrated transport system...

Couple of Crossrail updates
It is understood TfL have a £1bn loan from EIB (European Investment Bank) towards their share of funding (they have previously used EIB for East London line extension and DLR extension) which will be formally announced soon
An extension from Maidenhead to Reading of Crossrail trains is being considered (since GWML electrification was announced) Depot would then be at Reading and the expensive new one and extra turn back facilities at Maidenhead abandoned to save money
