Neither would be a match for former London Buses's M1104 in terms of acceleration After seeing the Mk.1 initially outpacing the Mk.2 until Tiff closed the door, does make me wonder what the performance was like between the 2. I can't actually remember if I've actually traveled on a Mk.2 Metro, probably have been on a Harrow Buses (which went on in the end to First Capital) Mk.2 but would of been to young to remember anything technical about them. Can't recall going on any of the Cummins engined M's either, but from watching YouTube, they sound as though they'd at least accelerate faster than the Gardner M's (still prefer the Gardner M's though!) Would anyone know of any rallies where you would be almost guaranteed a bit of Metrobus action this coming summer? I dare say RR work is out the question for the old girls nowadays! Haven't been on a Metro for a while now, last one was M1 on the Ensign running day with Vjaska a good few years ago! I call them old girls, but I find it hard to believe that M1 will be 40 years young this year! Still don't see them as an old vehicle, guess that's because I grew up on the type!

Having travelled on the Mark 1, Mark II and Cumin engine variants[1] I speculate that performance between the two engine types were for the most[2] part the same. I say this because the B reg Gardner engined Metros we had at Stockwell were just as nippy (esp. on pullaway) as the Cummin engined batch which were/are also B reg, making me conclude that Metros from1985/86 were remapped slightly different (slightly more enhanced performance) from their earlier variants. I also can't believe the breed are approaching 40 years as I still remember my first time travelling on one, the 111 from Heathrow to Kingston in the late 70s.... showing my age. I remember my enjoyment being enhanced when the breed ran through Phipps bridge on the Sunday 88, my enjoyment further enhanced when the 200 got converted to the type. Despite driving a few other more modern buses (and my enjoyment of travelling on types I've never driven) I still rate the Metrobus as my all time favourite bus type. [1] - all variants I travelled on were Brixton based; M1084-1105 - mk1 with Cummin engines M1441 - mk2 with Gardner engine M1442 - mk2 with Cummin engine [2] - M1104 was a big exception as she had uprated horsepower and torque and was a lot faster, equivalent to comparing ex-Stockwell's X reg PDLs with their 02 reg variant (before the latter got slightly governed)

Just needed to go to Woodford this evening, the 179 was in a state so I took the Central Line up to South Woodford then a W13. Near Woodford Wells a Solo went by and the driver stopped in the middle of the road to chat to my driver, I thought I'll investigate how well a photo from my angle would turn out - Not very well it seems However now I'm informed this working is actually rare so I've attached it. EDIT: Looking back this seems to have landed in the wrong thread and with persuasion it's now on Flickr flic.kr/p/254gcY7

I remember some of the Cummin batch were able to hold the gears longer in in the kickdown. M826 from SW was the same when i had it on the 88. I remember being surprised hearing the engine revving higher than usual prior to 2nd gear.

I travelled on one on the 133 when new and was very impressed, especially as I was no fan of the usual Metrobus.

That would be M1441 & M1442 as they were the two AVE trial MCW Metrobuses at SW alongside the other trial vehicles (L1-3, H1-3, V1-3 and any others I've forgotten). I'm saddened you don't like the MCW Metrobus though (that, Gardener, ONCL10, & TL11 engined Olympians & Titans being the best buses ever built IMO) but each to their own

My experience of Metrobuses was not extensive, tbh, but maybe I just came across a few that were particularly rattly, or were being badly driven. I was a fan of the Metropolitan, though, with their great speed, and I wish the Titan could have had more success for Leyland. I loved the original Leyland Titans so was automatically prejudiced in favour of the new version. Oh, hang on, that DOESN'T mean I was in favour of the New Routemaster! M1442 was the bus I travelled on, I think, and, as I say, I was impressed.

It's cool, we all have different likes I was lucky in that growing up in Brixton in the 90's, I had a good number of L's, M's & T's which meant I grew to like them (as well as the VC's at SW). Sadly, I never rode a Metropiltan when they're in service but I've rode MD60 on numerous occasions since it's been preserved. The DMS was another bus I missed out om though I may have rode one as a toddler as I vaguely remember seeing one chugging along Brixton Hill in the very early 90's and have since rode a few examples at running days to which I think they'r decent

Although that was taken after her subsequent transfer from SW to BN. Thought it was strange (but not impossible, in those pre-privatisation days) that it was terminating at BN

Probably a typo,as I think you meant the last RM rather than RT day on the 95/95A as the route converted straight from RTW to RM in May 1966 and never had an official RT allocation. The RMs for the 95 were BN's first Routemasters and when the 95 converted to DMS on 2/1/71 BN lost its RM allocation for awhile.
