Dear TfL,
I want to tell you about the wonderful experience I had on the 31 the other day. I was travelling from Chalk Farm towards Kilburn.
I know how much you like to help your passengers, and you must be really clever with the amazing ways you think of to assist passengers. It was an eight minute wait for the next 31, not an unreasonable wait given the 10 minute frequency. I know passengers are used to expect a shorter wait with a six minute headway, but now with two sets of frequency cuts you are starting to teach passengers patience, just like those in outer London have long faced. There were the usual tuts and shrugs as people got fed up, but relatively few gave up altogether to go another way. This is much better than an my previous travels when so many passengers gave up. Your aim to teach passengers patience is starting to bear fruit
I was looking around at Chalk Farm and saw the tube station. I know how you like us all to use the train now, but how could I get to Kilburn by train? Northern line to Waterloo, Bakerloo to Kilburn Park, Northern to Kings Cross, Met to Baker Street, then the 189 or Bakerloo line. Maybe Northern to Euston then Overground.......but all options would take longer. Sorry, I need that direct bus route, so I am waiting....but at least I did think of modal change as you now want us to do.
Eventually the 31 came and there were about 20 people waiting now, while the bus had standing room only. In the bad old days you would have had two buses coming together to ensure there was more than sufficient capacity, but that would now be considered 'flabby' and we know how the Mayor hates 'flabby'!! We all managed to squeeze on, but let's hope not too many more wish to get on. I was delightfully squeezed in and able to sample new and exciting smells next to other passengers! Thankfully some passengers didn't wait and had walked off, otherwise there would have been no room for the next few passengers wishing to board. I am in your awe that you knew some passengers would walk off so there would be exactly enough room for everyone....and this is in summer and not even in peak hours. Budget airlines would be proud of your calculations.!!!!! We soon arrived at Swiss Cottage where enough people got off to make the bus reasonably comfortable again.
I look forward to my next journey and if you reduce the frequency further we can have a new game of guessing how many people will be forced into modal change as there won't be enough room on the bus.

None of the experimental XA class of Leyland Atlanteans survived - all were exported to Hong Kong and eventually scrapped. All three H class Dennis Dominators have been scrapped. I believe both the A class of Dodge minibuses that ran in Potters Bar have gone. Also not heard anything recently about the VC class of Volvo Citybuses that Stockwell ran in the 90s : I fear they may all be gone. busaholic: I believe MS4 is still with us - but hasn’t been out in public for some while.

I believe both the A class of Dodge minibuses that ran in Potters Bar have gone. Also not heard anything recently about the VC class of Volvo Citybuses that Stockwell ran in the 90s : I fear they may all be gone. busaholic: I believe MS4 is still with us - but hasn’t been out in public for some while. At least one VC has been preserved thankfully - it will or is wearing LBL London General livery

I believe both the A class of Dodge minibuses that ran in Potters Bar have gone. Also not heard anything recently about the VC class of Volvo Citybuses that Stockwell ran in the 90s : I fear they may all be gone. busaholic: I believe MS4 is still with us - but hasn’t been out in public for some while. We still have one example of the XF(Fleetline), and for our younger readers they were nigh on identical to the XA(Atlantean) Attachment Deleted (Ian's Bus Stop page) As I used to live opposite SW, it was nice to see all of the experimental buses on a day to day basis usually running on the 170. I often wonder why they didn't use V as it was nearer to Chiswick. Any clues?

The experimental buses went to Stockwell I believe because SW had no experience with Metrobuses or Titans so were considered to be less biased than V - the fear was V would unfairly favour the Mark II Metrobus because they already operated Mark Is.

IIRC Leylands and Daimlers used the same Leyland O.680 engine, but the Daimler had a straight cut gearbox and a similar whine in 3rd and 4th gear like the Bristol VR. I think London Fleetlines had an issue with overheating, and all the London ones tried to hide the bustle at the back with huge vents for air intakes... I vaguely remember Fleetlines on the E1 before new fangled MCW's took over Leyland Atlanteans outlived the Fleetlines and the last Atlantean was a B reg (1985?) That's my trivia exhausted

I had a ride on XF3 yesterday.
Very good turn of speed between Oxted and Westerham.
None of the Strachans bodied Merlins survived. XMS and XMB.
