Typical bloody Vista if you ask me!! I constantly get at least one occasion where IE decides it's gonna crash on me and not work, yet on XP i rarely suffer anything like this (except at uni where the system just overloads ;D) I've also heard from my mate, who used a Mac on his uni music degree, that they're pretty overated compared to a Windows unit. This is a guy who designs his own websites to the same sort of standard as TfL, Tesco and various other big companies ;D Personally, i would try out Windows 7 or go back to XP. In fact, i might just get a new laptop full stop soon with 7 on it My IT guy has been a beta tester for Windows 7 since January, and was issued a 'demo' copy a couple of weeks ago. He is holding a demonstration evening (beer supplied! ) next Wednesday to show prospective users how good Windows 7 really is. He really DOES think its the dogs!

That will definitively advise if your laptop will accept a Windows 7 installation.

It's not just you either. A shame really because in my experience I find XP provides better functionality over Vista, which just "looks nice" For the record I have two PCs at home, the family one using XP and my own personal one on Vista. It's just the idea that the iMac is purely Apple - not various parts from various places bundled into a shell. I never had any problems with XP as it goes but that just seems like a huge step back now. I feel the same way when i use the system at uni, just seems so dated! Might go down to Comet's on Sunday and see if they have any laptops fitted with Windows 7 so i can try it out, then go next door to Argos and buy it ;D

I have a similar opinion of Apple Safari - I wouldn't go back to IE now. Safari (for me anyway) is so much more user friendly as a web browser.

Any feedback is welcomed The main thing I have noticed about Mac's is the price difference. Many people feel Mac's are superior, and I will agree to some extent as most programs do run fairly well on them when compared to Windows - but you are going to pay a much steeper price. As for myself I have never owned a Mac as my personal computer, but I use them at college on a daily basis despite being a regular Windows user. Furthermore the specifications you pay for in a Mac, when compared to a Windows PC, are much higher. Personally I think they are great computers for business or basic home use, they're a stable, well running computer that will be sure to be there when you need it. Pay a little more, sacrifice some performance in some areas and you've got yourself a Mac. Though I have to admit at first glance I did like the Mac, but after using it for a while at college to do certain things, I realized that a PC running Windows are a lot more easier to operate. Maybe that is my personal view, but it all depends on what you need to do/what you are going to use it for. Both have their pros and cons. You may also want to visit an Apple Store, they let you test sample their latest Macs, iPods, iPhones etc. and also acts as a free internet cafe. I feel this is great opportunity to test drive a Mac before paying for one, so before making any decisions I advise you to head over there first!

What's IE? ;D Seriously though I rarely use Internet Explorer these days, I just feel uneasy using it. The Great Fox Of Fire is my web browser of choice nowadays, as I personally find it more reliable, plus I can have add-ons to it which help increase security and/or prevents scripts I don't want from executing. I use Macs every now and then (in fact I've borrowed my brother's Macbook Pro and am using it right now to type this ), and I have no problem using them. I'd have probably switched over to Mac years ago were it not for the fact that some of my favourite programs are Windows-only.

This thread has made intersting reading to me especially as I think my laptop is dying really tempted to pay the extra and get a Mac book especially as my daughter is getting an iPhone for Christmas (she wanted it for her birthday, but I managed to persuade her to wait so I could see if Orange getting them would reduce the price at O2 ;D) and it should make uploading to it easier (she gets me to put everything on to her phone/mp3 player so it's my comp that gets weighed down with all the extra programmes). I have recently gone back to IE from Firefox (I was having problems updating the Java add on, on Firefox) and I have just noticed I have got Safari installed on my Vista laptop...must have been from when my daughter had an iPod

I too am considering a Mac purely cos my laptop is seemingly giving up (second Vista one in 18 months!!) so shelling out the extra cash for an iMac doesn't seem like a bad idea. Give Safari a try - I find it really user friendly. I have the latest version (Version 4 I think) and it has a handy "Top Sites" button on the toolbar that can be personalised for frequent sites. It can also have appearance settings customised too

I was looking at an iMac, however I've had a Laptop for soooo long now I think I'll stick to that sort of thing. I don't think my problems are OS related more Hard drive as it keeps overheating and switching itself off, I'm hoping the fact I have moved all my music and documents etc...off on to an external drive will solve it however the laptop is 2 years old so it's about time I considered updating

Should really have mentioned this earlier but I got a new laptop last weekend pre-loaded with Windows 7. Greeny I think you could be right regarding the taskbar; Micro$oft do seem to be copying Apple on a few ideas. Was the same when the former launched Vista. In the leaflet I recieved with my laptop expressing "all the delights of Windows 7" it was noted that boot-up and shut-down times would be significantly quicker than with its predecessors. My laptop takes longer than my Vista PC to shut down.

My laptop takes longer than my Vista PC to shut down. It's worrying that in practice the new laptop isn't working as Microsoft intended. How much memory is it running?? Interestingly it's both Microsoft and Apple (some time before) that have made "improvements" to their boot-up ad shut-down times. Having not used a Mac OS before I can't really comment but I found Vista to be pretty quick - glad to have some feedback from someone using Windows 7 though
