Any news yet on the 2 new electrics that'll be ordered for route 20? I've just had a look on Google maps through the entire route and at the Loughton/Debden end, there are some quite narrow roads and tight turns, however I can see HCT Group going for the Optare Metrodecker instead of the Enviro 400EV as I believe the Enviro 400EVs may just be too long to turn onto the narrow roads in the Loughton/Debden area but let's wait and see. There was suggestions they had purchased the E400EV demo when it last featured on the 20, but then it headed off to Metroline. I read elsewhere that OME2652 is not available for purchase as is only loaned back to Optare? Is the original Optare Metrodecker demo still available? They didn't purchase the E400EV demonstrator, but they did buy/loan the Metrodecker OM1/YJ16DBO for school extras. OME2652 was sold back to Optare, probably because Metroline had a surplus amount of the bus when the 134 was cut to Warren Street.

The 167 took pretty much the same route and I believe has used longer single deckers before but not 100% sure. I think the 20 under Arriva saw long single deckers as well.

Buckhurst Hill Station can be sightly tight getting around on the current part of the 167 on a 10.5m E200 MMC.
Anyway to the original question about the 20, a 10.9m E400 EV should able get around the Debden Estate part of the 20 without much issues as long as there aren't any badly parked vehicles on any of the turns/junctions.

I believe during the early 2000's before Docklands buses got the 167 the X-reg GGO buses allocated to the 173 would occasionally show up on Sundays and they were 10.7m but yes as mentioned above the MCVs were 10.2m.

It has been reported on the "School Extras Vehicles" thread that HCT Group has just acquired former Tower Transit Enviro400 DN 33792 (SN13 CHD) for schools work and rail replacement duties. It is currently a temporary addition to the fleet but may become permanent. It has been inspected, deep cleaned and given its HCT branding and should be ready for service today (Thursday 3rd September).

If the Enviro400 EVs do turn out to be too long for the 20 (personally I don't think they are) they could easily be redeployed to the 388.

And for our younger readers, picture from Ian Armstrongs bus page wow memories! Shames I can't give this more than one like! Used to love these, especially when the used to pop up on the 179 from time to time- likewise when the Lynxs used to turn up on the 167.
