Is it that time of the year? Yet another crash, this time in Kingston, saw on the front of the Surrey Comet, a picture of a K* SD(Transdev) smashed thru' a wall. The headline was about it taking 2 hours for an ambulance to attend! Is it the quality of the drivers being recruited, the pressure they are under or just driving standards in genenal where nobody these days seems to give way to a bus? I let a 65 out into the traffic queue in Richmond this morning, and the driver behing tooted and fingered me as if I had no right to do so. he then tried all the way to Kew Bridge to pass me and the bus, he failed!! k5 bus crash John, your probably right about the recruitment process as most drivers who get sacked from one company for whatever reason, will just go to another company. Just as long as you got that pcv licence, you got no problems. Talking of bus crashes. There was one yesterday in brixton where the 133 driver got it wrong and when pulling out from the stop, the driver caught the arriva bus in front. Oops! As fro that 188 which crash into the shop, I say they should get rid of those volvos as viewing, copmared to our tridents, is fairly restricted due to all the obstructions inside the bus. Still, its no excuse to drive right into that shop lol

I know what you mean about restricted view. I always notice it when changing from VP's to VWL's - at one time hated the VWL's and lucky for me at the time they didn't venture onto the 185 that much. The safety procedures for double deck buses are far to inadequate. Bus hitting bridges is a pretty common occurance. Whether you choose to blame the driver or not is irrelevent. It is a known risk and a common occurance. Something has to be done about it. Just relying on drivers does not work.

About 1/2 mile before there is a height scanner, which if the vehicle is over height a sign flashes up. Maybe in London there are too many bridges to equip in a similar fashion. Alternatively, at the manufacturing stage why not fit a "scanner" to the front of the bus to detect low bridges. Or alternatively employ drivers who know what height their vehicle are and can see the bridge in front of them!!

There's one before the bridge by Orpington Station that tells you to turn left because your overheight, however a PVL can go under the bridge similarly there's also one on the Kingsway tunnel that goes off even if your in the inside lane going over Waterloo Bridge and have no intention of going through the tunnel

iBus has low bridge warnings integrated into the system, so hopefully incidents can be reduced when every vehicle is fitted.

I see that ELBG have brought out from under the wraps RM1933, repainted in the vintage style of Indian Red and silver, promoting Bow Garage Centenary, running on Heritage route 15. I bet they come across a few Cowboys at Trafalgar Square!!

The safety proceedures (ie height of bus displayed in cab) are quite adequate in 99.9% of cases, it is incompetent drivers that are the problem.
