Does anyone know where the VLA vehicles are coming from to replace the current older DLA's on the 370? I take these will probably be 54 / 05-reg vehicles like the ones seen on the 123 and 128? - Gareth.

They are 05 reg and some have already passed through ADL at Harlow for refurb and are in store at Southend.

Would expect them to start filtering into service within the next couple of weeks if that's the case

Could be a case of Southend applying them before being sent to GY. Although your theory carries just as much weight

Thanks guys, so there are 13 of them. (11 for PVR; 2 spares) Which route(s) have these been operating on previously at Norwood then, and did that route get new vehicles to allow these to freed up? (or was the route lost by Arriva?)
I really like the VLA's that are on the 123 and 128, I think they are good vehicles with an excellent upper deck seating capacity of 45, which is extraordinary considering the vehicles are short wheelbase!
The lower deck is also an upgrade on the DLA's currently on the 370, as all the seats apart from the rear are forward facing. I have never understood the DLA's sideward seats, I think they are terrible.
The only draw back of the VLA is the wheelchair bay, which is very small and can only accomodate one buggy. - Gareth.

They previously were on the 249 which was lost to London General in March 2012.

How can you prefer the sideways arrangement? I know its a matter of opinion, but who wants to travel sidewards? It different from a train as a train doesnt turn like a bus, and the seats are high backed making it very enclosed - horrible.
I'm pleased the VLA's are only having a short stay, I have never been a fan of them at all. - Gareth.

PS Do you think that these buses will have lower case destinations, and what refurbs will be applied? I take it these will get new seat covers, and a re-spray to freshen them up? - Gareth.

Also, I'm pretty sure that the 370's DLA's have standard seats.

I'm sorry, but it's a pretty stupid arguement over side facing seats being "horrid" or "terrible". Up until the mid 90's, the side facing seats were standard on all buses. The backwards seats arrangement is actually a very recent development in terms of lower deck layouts

Perhaps it is preference, but I just cannot stand sidewards facing seats! They have always made me feel uneasy as you are not at a front facing angle. I do not like rear-seating either, but I guess the downstairs ones are unavoidable due to the wheel arches.
You are right John, I remember the Titan bus had loads of sideways seats on the lower deck. I know the Titan was a very popular vehicle and my opinion might be because they were aging when I was using them, but I didn't particularly like them and was delighted when they were replaced by low-floor buses.
Perhaps early in their careers they were excellent vehicles, but whenever I boarded an 87, they were smelly, freezing cold in the winter, generally had a poor layout. It also had a central staircase, which I've never been in favour of.
When I used to go to college, fellow students and I would pray a T-reg Trident from the 5 allocation would come as an 87 as we hated the freezing Titans! - Gareth.
