The only single decker route in Brixton I wouldn't deck is the P5 but that should be using 10.2m or 10.8m single deckers. The P5 couldn't be double decked anyway as there is a low bridge on Loughborough Road Indeed, also there are low bridges on Bedford Road, Stewarts Road & Thessaly Road as well

I wonder why - did they not want to fund it? Maybe because of the tight roads at Carshalton. I saw a 10.6 Gemini on 152 on those roads and it really struggled. Must be the driver. I never driven a volvo on the 152 but I had a trident. Had no problems with it although I was weary of the trees on locks lane, mitcham eastfields as they are dangerously close to the road.

They'd probably buy Enviro400 for the route now anyway which are the same length (roughly)

The P5 couldn't be double decked anyway as there is a low bridge on Loughborough Road I did wonder why it didn't go over to 10.2m buses like the P12 did. The current vehicles are dual door anyway. The P5 should have 10.2m buses. Why it was ordered 9.3m buses makes no sense....

At one point, it was allocated a mix of R LGH LDP's & dual door S reg LDP's and even DP192 ran around the route whilst it was at Q. Maybe Calais Street in Camberwell was giving them trouble.

I was told the 152 was considered by Abellio during tender but TfL rejected the proposal. They even did a trial run with a Gemini, I wonder why - did they not want to fund it? Had a chat with one of my contacts and he speculates it was linked to the Green Bus Fund. Appearantly the firm had originally applied for more than thirteen hybrids so that the entire 188 (and part of the 343) was converted....thus freeing up the appropriate number of 55/06 reg Volvos for the 152 and 157. The later was obviously granted as the 157 was a fleet upgrade from existing double deckers.

Perhaps, like the case of the 484, it was decided that although it was possible to fit longer buses round it wasn't particularly easy and so not practical.

Interesting.

And I believe they also had a DB250 chassied Plaxton President, either T131 (or 135) AUA... or was that under Mitchell Belle?

Sorry to bump an old thread, Received an e-mail this afternoon following the 350 consultation, as most will already know, TfL decided to go ahead with the Saturday service reduction. A total of 18(!) people made a responce regarding the changes, with 12 against and 6 for (nice to see TfL siding with passengers!) Of the people against, one of the most commonly raised questions seemed to be regarding the occasional use of single deckers, to which TfL replied 'Single deck buses are only used in exceptional circumstances, The operator has been made aware that doubled deck buses have to be used on all departures' consultations.tfl.gov.uk/buses/route-350-1/results/350-summary-final.pdf
