When a bus has completed its final run with passengers and is some distance from the garage/depot, is it left up to the driver which route he/she takes or is there some sort of official instruction regarding this? I guess the same applies to early morning buses with some way to travel from the garage/depot to reach the point where the first passengers are due to be picked up.

From what I've heard anyway you want as long as you avoid low bridges, restricted roads and a few roads that residents have complained about, I'm sure there was a mention of this by Madstuntman ages ago when a road that was used by 160's (I think) running light was not allowed to be used as residents complained

In the garage there is the route written out with no map, it also says where the curtailment points are and where the buses stand and also a light running route. But I was told when I first started at New Cross that if I wasn't sure follow the line of route.
I'm guessing you can go your own way but if anything happens then its on your head and no one else. Some routes its easier to follow line of route (21, 36, 436) others there are short cuts/ easier routes, like the 321 from Foots Cray Tesco, straight along the A20 until you get to Kidbroke and then line of route. The 108 from New Cross straight down to Deptford, up over Blackheath Common to Sun In The Sands round about to join the A2 then line of route but missing out the Bow Church/ Bromley High Street square.

a lot of garages will have designated light running routes for all of their light running buses to take, but in general drivers will no doubt take the quickest safe route to/from their start/finish point. some of these light running routes may not be bus routes. It is advised to follow the designated routes but there may be occasions where other routes or a deviation of the route needs to be made.
Some duties may include light running instructions for instance where traffic or a restriction may affect a light running bus at a certain time they may be instructed on the duty card to run via an alternative route etc.

I know that the 201 runs light from Herne Hill to Morden via Brixton Water Lane as I hear the DW's pass right outside my house. The 133's run light to & from Brixton via the 2 to N as well as the dead run from Streatham Hub to N.

To be honest I always ignored the ban... (f**k it I don't work there anymore... What they gonna do now?!?)

A majority of BE routes coming from the Newham and Ilford areas use the A13 for light running eg. Routes 167 (from the Redbridge Relief Road), 300, 368, 376, 462, EL1, EL2, W19 etc.

I know that some of us drivers running light from crystal palace to BC were banned from using grange road in thornton heath although im not sure why. We just go via whitehorse road instead. We were also banned from using manor road in pollards hill (when running light to and from BC) due to complaints from residents about too many buses using that road. Of course, if we were running out of service as a 152 then we can use that road but other routes were not allowed. I know that some drivers on the P13 run light from Streatham going via Streatham vale and mitcham eastfields, or others go straight on the A23 via norbury, thornton heath and purley way. The rest just go through manor road regardless

With the exception schools, 111, N9 and (N)27, sometimes AV run buses dead from their 'outer' termini (Northolt, Southall, Uxbridge etc.) which I think is a bit pointless. Surely if a route terminates near (or in the case of the majority of AVs routes) at their home garage then why would you run up to twelve miles dead?
I know the 111s go more or less the 281 line of route from Kingston to Whiton (except between Teddington Lock and Twickenham-the R68 route is shorter), then follow a slightly more direct routeing via H22 to Hounslow, thus ensuring none of the 'service' 111 route is served.
Other routes (and 111s from Heathrow), I'm not sure beyond the Great West Road, but between that area (where the 111 and 120 meet) to AV they go via 111

Almost For both the 222 and H98, from Cranford it is usually the A4 to Lampton Corner then Kingsley Road to get to AV, or alternatively from The Parkway at Bull's Bridge they go via Convent Way and Heston to Lampton Corner (or even via Western Road and Norwood Green to get to Lampton Corner, sometimes hear DLE's go past after midnight). The 120 can be via the first of the mentioned routes or majority of the line of route, so from Northolt, A40 slip road - Kensington Road - Lady Margaret Road - South Road - Merrick Road - Norwood Green to Lampton Corner (italics being away from the normal route, H32 is exactly the same from South Road).

Oh so I'm guessing that it's only the 112 and U7 (terminating at Hayes) that uses the Parkway to WS and maybe also the 207/N207 (from Hayes-By-Pass) to get to Bulls Bridge, North Hyde Road and Swallowfield Way.

Those routes in my post do use The Parkway, and also the ones you mentioned now. The 195 and H28 also use The Parkway to get to their garages from Brentford/Osterley. The SN's at HZ also use it to get to/from Scania Heathrow which is in Stanwell. And it is used by the 105, 120, 195, 427 and 607 in service when those religious events take place in Southall or on diversion for other reasons, especially if the bridge at Southall Station is closed.

They also follow the line of route back and another one that I've seen them do is: Cowley Rd, Falling Lane, Stockley Road, M4 then I presume they come off at J3, use The Parkway and A4 (then they follow Hassaan's routing)

On the 36 between Queens Park and NX some drivers stick to the line of route, others go via Kennington Lane, Elephant and Old Kent Road
