When I went to the area around Notting Hill Carnival, I saw: 436X - MEC15, full: www.flickr.com/photos/wltmauc/9602479686/2X - VLA10, full: www.flickr.com/photos/wltmauc/9602946520/36X - E266, full: www.flickr.com/photos/wltmauc/9599682379/36 Extras- WVL129, full: www.flickr.com/photos/wltmauc/9599646131/205X - 12132, barely loaded at all: www.flickr.com/photos/wltmauc/9602850264/All taken between 1300hrs and 1500hrs. On the Monday, 2X had a few VLAs and Ts, 436X was all MEC, 205X was all E40H. The loadings at the pictures reflected the early-afternoon crowds on all the buses at that time. 205X - I used that both directions as I could get on it! Also, 31/295/316/328 were on diversion via White City* and this was part of the full double decker allocation on the 316: TE1310, TEH1453
The extra capacity was needed on certain routes like the 28, 94, 148, 328, 295, etc but some routes like 205X seemed to be less used upon observation. I think that 205X might have had been used a lot more early/late for the carnival, but I am unsure fully about that. It does link East London to the carnival though!

I was at the carnival on Monday. I tried to board one of the express routes at Victoria but all of them were packed. The 436X would just bypass the stops as they were always full. Ended up getting on the 52. On my way back I got on a 2X to Brixton. It took almost an hour to get there

A journey between shepherds bush and Notting hill gate took me 50 mins on a 148. That was Monday afternoon at 1630

That's why I used the tube and went via White City to get home from Marylebone, it was much quicker! I also ended up getting pictures of buses on diversion (before I had to run to East Acton...)
