When Red Ken was mayor he said he was going to get rid of all prefix & suffix routes eg:W11 & 77A.All the suffix routes are gone but there doesn't seem to have been any movement on the prefix routes.Has it been quietley dropped by Boris,or isn't there enough route numbers to do it?

Im sure there was a plan to do this at one stage, and a couple were changed, H23 became 423 for example. This seems to have been quietly dropped however. I think that this is a good thing, as it seems unnecessary and the Prefixed routes tend to differentiate by being local services as opposed to trunk routes

Maybe you're right, but I'm sure Ken did mention prefixes & suffixes.

Long-Standing S2 also went replaced by 425/488

There are quite a bit. 84, 218, 278, 301, 304, 306, 311, 334, 335, 338, 342, 348, 351, 361, 369, 373, 374, 392, and loads in the 400 Series. Tbh the majority of the Prefix Routes are fine. There are a few routes where the Prefix used makes no sense. E.g P4 & P5 do not go to Peckham

I would guess that would only be renumbered if the night element ever differs from the day variant.

You could attach them onto old routes e.g. 232 from Hounslow to Turnpike Lane or 270 from Hampton to Tooting! Joking aside, you could change the rules a bit to allow the 500 series to be used for normal routes. Or perhaps keeping letters for special services (e.g. 'S' for schools, 'X' for eXpress etc.) And the 369 would return!

One thing I find odd is the 607? X67 would have been better IMO.

I can't recall that issue ever being raised by ken livingstone. Can you remember the context as it seems a daft thing for a Mayor to have a view about? I can sort of understand suffixes going as they tended to be squashed on blinds and therefore difficult to read given the move to provide DDA compliant blind displays. I really do not see the point of changing long established route numbers that people are used to. Am I particularly concerned that one of my local routes starts with a "W"? Err no and I doubt anyone else cares. I know commercial operators with smallish networks like to go for "easy to remember" numbers and try hard to avoid three digit numbers as apparently people struggle to remember them. Ensignbus use simple numbers on their network - usually a multiple of 11 or similar. That scale of simplicity is just not practical in London given the huge network. I hate bus networks where the same number is used multiple times by different operators or in areas not far apart. There are several number 1s, 2s, 10s, 11s, 12s etc in Tyne and Wear for example - previously there was a coherent county wide numbering scheme which had a logical structure.

342 would be ideal for renumbering the P12, especially as it runs partially along the neighboring 343. The best time to renumber it would've been the significant extension to Surrey Quays where the route was pretty much transformed. It could've been done in conjunction with the changes as it doesn't seem worthwhile to renumber something from its established number out of the blue. It's a shame there's not an available number ending in 12 as that would be ideal for similarity It's funny you say that because a lot of renumbering/ replaced sections has been pretty much based on that e.g. 36, 136, 436 68, 168, 468 21, 321 63, 363 53, 453 15, 115 133, 333 37, 337, H37 Next Number 253, 254
