As I said in my last post, I went to Barking Riverside for the brand new Overground extension Walked to Wood Green Station Piccadilly line- Wood Green to Kings Cross St Pancras Hammersmith and City line- King's Cross St Pancras to Barking Overground- Barking to Barking Riverside
The station looks absolutely beautiful. Shame it couldn't be extended further. I wouldn't rule it out even if it was built so a part of the station would have to be demolished if an extension was planned. Anyway back to the journey
Walked to Barking Riverside Pier RB1- Barking Riverside to London Bridge City VWH2094 (17)- London Bridge to Hillmorton Road/Holloway Nags Head HV128 (29)- Holloway Nags Head to Wood Green Station Walked home

Did an trip out of London for my (now passed) Birthday.
Themeslink Cricklewood to Luton - First time in years using this train service to outside London, and the journey is just as tranquil as ever. I forgot how mentally stimulating the little details you see (i.e. birds flying and the many retail shops in distance, parks and duel carrageways) esp in Brent Cross and Mill Hill directions.
Route A (KX12 GZP) - Luton to Dunstable Asda. Nice guided bus section sharing an duel carriageway.
Route 40 (YN54 AHG) - Dunstable Asda to Whipsnade Animal Park. Now this one was lovely and I personally consider an hidden gem. Some nice thrash and kickdown in the Dunstable Downs area, with really nice scenery.
Route 40A (YN54 AHG) - Whipsnade Animal Park to Dunstable, Church St. Same as above really, although last bus of day (did have anxiety due to personal issue processing information on last bus stop location).
Route Z - (KX11 OSG) - Dunstable, Church St - Luton Station. Took this instead of A route. Longer than thought. On another note I like how those buses sound quite similar to the Leyland Olympion.
Themeslink Luton to St Albans City. Had to take this one here, as no Mill Hill service. Again very tranquil, esp seeing blackirds flying in daybreak (small stuff that counts).
Themeslink St Albans City to Mill Hill Broadway. Nothing to report.
221 - (HV229) - MHB to North Finchley. Missed an Gemini 2 hybrid, but thankfully this Gemini 3 turned out to be an outstanding ride. Did an fantastic job revving up fast on the hills and was very rapid and roaring on the open roads. Strong alternative to those DWs.
460 - VWH1411 - NF to My Area. This one had the honour of my 62 Reg VWH ride for my birthday, and one I bump into very often at one point my stalker bus. An stellar machine as always, also in part of the driver who roared it at times.

142 to Edgware: ADE40413 Northern line to Belsize Park: Unit 51674 168 to Hampstead Heath: ST812 - Completely by chance, also the first time I've seen this one in a while. C11 back to Belsize Park station: DE1122 168 to Camden: LT661 - At this point you can probably tell I started out with only half a plan! 27 to Notting Hill Gate: LT690 94 to Shepherd's Bush station: BCE47029 - Packed, at least downstairs, as were a couple more 94s I noticed passing heading east. Walked to White City 607 to Ealing Common: VMH2569 483 to Hillcrest Road (south of Hanger Lane): VW1278 112 to Staples Corner: DEL2608 - Never used this section of the 112 before, was worried this would get stuck in traffic but got along okay. 142 back to Watford: ADE40309 - Again completely by chance. Seats seemed somewhat softer than on the standard RATP batch.

Today I headed towards Oxford street by bus and suddenly remembered how much of a hassle it is from east London. One thing I noticed in both directions was how passengers still use the 25 from the first and last stop at City Thames Link to continue journeys east and west. Just shows how passengers don't always adapt and transfer to trains when routes are cut.
Buses used :
147 - Despite these buses looking knackered on the outside they are pretty decent internally.
115 15 25 - Was great to see the city busy as this is the first time I have been uptown during a weekday since the pandemic. 55 - Not a fan of the refurbs and hardly seems worth it IMO

Did a few more end to ends yesterday - have now done 268 routes end to end (including some which tfl has got rid of…)
178 (to QEH): uneventful journey to pick up the first end to end from QEH
469 (QEH to Erith): frustratingly saw a 469 disappear up the road as I was approaching so had a 15 min wait. My bus (once I ultimately started) was quite quick initially (so much better than central where buses just crawl!). However, we got regulated somewhere in the back lanes of abbey wood (checked and saw the bus ahead was running 11 min late….). Then proceeded at a crawl for some more time, got regulated again at Belvedere Asda (4 min!). I was getting very annoyed as I had a 3 min margin to get the 428 at Erith. Unfortunately my bus kept being slow and reached 5 min late (so net 2 min after the 428 departure) forcing another ~13 min wait. Overall a nice one (not sure how the DDs on the 401 cope with Picardy Road!) but managed to complete the last outstanding route in Woolwich
428 (Erith to Bluewater): my only end to end DD ride of the day so was looking forward to it. And wasn’t disappointed! It was a pretty quick ride given the roads it serves. The 428 (as are the 96 and 492) are on a long diversion between crayford and dartford (owing to the A207 being closed); involves going via bourne road, black Prince interchange, A2, dartford interchange, old bexley lane, princes road and back on LOR on the A207. So got to experience the fast 50/70mph stretches! There are some lovely stretches on the route post dartford I must say (good views of the Thames plus queen Elizabeth bridge)
428 (bluewater to Erith): same bus, same seat, bus was on stand for a minute. More lovely views
Quick dash to Costa for sandwich / coffee / toilet (had 11 min to do it!)
B12 (Erith to joydens wood and then to bexley library): last outstanding route from Erith. The bus goes onto a lengthy hail & ride section post the first stop. Has an interesting route into bexleyheath but gets really picturesque post bexley. After one of the stops (this was a PM journey) it becomes a B12 to Erith and then goes anti clockwise around the loop at joydens wood. Some interesting sights on the GLA border
Got off at bexley. Had an annoying 14 min wait for a 492. Was busy on the phone, didn’t realise the 492 came barrelling without veering close to the stop. I showed my hand fairly last minute and the driver was livid once I got on and shouted at me and was throwing arms as to why I wasn’t looking at the bus. Ok maybe my mistake at least partially as I dived into the phone last min as the bus was being shown due for the past 2 min but the guy just came full steam with no intention of stopping (I was standing so at least managed to hold out my hand; if I had been sitting no chance I would have seen the bus till it had sailed past - the way the stop is, you can’t see the bus if you are sitting down till it’s at the stop, the bus stop being a small lay by). I was pretty annoyed but didn’t want to spoil my mood
Had an intention of getting down at Ruxley corner but as we came up to the roundabout saw a Swanley bound 233 go past so knew had a 20 min wait. So stayed on the 492 till sidcup
233 (sidcup to Swanley): had to get to one end. Got regulated twice in the short span as bus was a few min early
233 (Swanley to Eltham station): same bus, same seat, different driver (came by fleet vehicle). Overall a fairly uneventful journey although got regulated no less than 4 times as the bus was several min early
Quick hop into Burger King for a burger and toilet break. Then jumped into a 321 to Southend crescent for the next bus
124 (Eltham Southend crescent to catford st Dunstans college): this was ironically the first bus of the day (leaving aside the short hop on the 321) high had a frequency better than every 15 min! The bus initially dawdled ay every stop but then started driving pretty quickly. We caught up with the 124 before us. The lead got exchanged 3 times before we finally emerged ahead
Took the 185 and then the 108 back home
Overall positive day as I managed to do 5 more routes (including some hard To do ones on the edge of the GLA) . Have now done 268 routes end to end . Have 2 more routes in Eltham (314, B15), two in bexleyheath (B14, B15) and 2 in lewisham (273, 261) left

Selected highlights from a weekday trip in July and a trip to North London to ride some routes and visit a few ‘new’ LU and LO stations.
Started with the rush-hour at Turnpike Lane strategically sat at the traffic lights adjacent to the LU station and bus station. Walked north towards Wood Green and after a light breakfast
184 / SEe134 / LF70 YWN / Brampton Park Road – Bounds Green Station / The bus was quiet and little to report except for a long queue at the traffic lights at Bounds Green. Piccadilly Line / Bounds Green – Wood Green / Bounds Green is a station that I cannot recall seeing let alone travelling from – after admiring the art deco fascade inspired by architect Charles Holden I made the short journey south – just one stop.
W3 / T213 / LJ61 CGK / The Broadway – Mount View Road / I’d fancied a ride on the W3 for a while and it didn’t disappoint: first a mediocre picture of T213 into sun at Wood Green then the crawl up the steep hill to the Alexandra Palace has been mentioned on the forum before and with hindsight I regret not taking some time out to explore the area around Ally Pally. Next I was taken by the residential area in Crouch End (or Stroud Green?) surrounding Ferme Park Road, for those like me new to the area a long straight road that drops, then rises again – with the sun in approximately the right position for photos I alighted to wait for the next W3
W3 / T217 / LJ61 CGX / Weston Park – Finsbury Park Station / Walked back a stop and managed to get a more acceptable photo of a W3 via the arriving T217. In no time at Finsbury Park where after walking to the area at the front of the station where the 19, 106 and 236 terminates enjoyed the novelty of seeing Stagecoach fleet numbers and legal lettering on Streetlites operating the 236 however still with Tower Transit transfers and website… Piccadilly Line / Finsbury Park – Manor House / Not quite the architectural joy that stations further north on the Piccadilly Line possess!
279 / T252 / LJ61 LJZ / Manor House Station – Birstall Road/Seven Sisters Station / Another Arriva ‘T’, quiet as start of the route and in the middle of the day for what I’ve seen reported as TfL’s fourth busiest route. Later I found myself at Tottenham Town Hall. I was going to catch a 149 south to Seven Sisters Station but suddenly a 318 arrived with no destination blind and a board by the windscreen stating “Stamford Hill”.
318 / EN9 / LJ57 UTA / Tottenham Town Hall – Seven Sister Station / This was too good an opportunity to miss and I now regret a short ride – I make this the second oldest vehicle in regular London service (only EN5 older?) – am I correct?
A mix of Victoria Line, Greater Anglia, 230 and Victoria Line enabled a side trip to NP via Tottenham Hale and then I found myself in Walthamstow. An hour here and of more than passing interests were ‘new’ NP electrics on the W15, Stagecoach re-registered Volvos (Eclipse Gemini 2s) working the 58 and of course Scanias headed north for Chingford and south to Stratford International. I’d ridden some of the WH Scanias on the 97 before but with time pressing on I took LO to Chingford.
London Overground / 710 120 / Walthamstow Central (WHC) – Chingford (CHI) – journey took just 10 minutes.
379 / WS80 / SK17 HHF / Chingford Station – Station Road/The Green – The plan in Chingford was to take a ride out to Yardley Lane Estate and wait and return to Chingford Station on the second bus and then take a 313 to Enfield but this plan was soon kicked into the long grass. A 379 duly arrived at the station but the 313 that followed it in was an Enfield DW. I was expecting a NRM but decided not to check the ever-excellent LVF for the next 313 arrival instead preferring a surprise. The next arrival was indeed a NRM, in fact LT1 but frustratingly I couldn’t get an acceptable photo. I’d last seen LT1 at Angel operating the 38 and wasn’t aware that it was one of the machines transferred to E. My cunning plan now was to take the 379 four or five stops where after checking the map I knew that my arriving afternoon shot of LT1 operating the 313 would have the sun perfectly positioned behind me. The 379 was quite busy with around a dozen people on board with more to come as I alighted in downtown Chingford. Besides the stop was a Co-Op and I couldn’t resist a blast of air-con and a cold drink on this 32C day. Immediately disaster struck as after no longer than 60 seconds in the shop I could see LT1 pulling away from the stop. I was reluctant to give up what may be my only ever choice for a ‘chance’ ride on LT1 and saw that the 313 had a nasty right-turn to make in busy traffic – not knowing where the next stop was I took a chance and made it breathless to the next stop – Chingford Police Station where I still had a little time to gather my composure and take a photo of the arriving LT1.
313 / LT1 / LTZ1001 / Chingford Police Station – Glyn Road / The bus was quiet as we headed west in the “No-Mans Land” of Lea Valley Road where there are reservoirs to the north and south of the road. In Ponders End LT1 filled considerably and I decided to alight at Glyn Road, at this time, the start of the evening rush hour was a very busy bus stop.
121 / DW572 / LJ13 CKP / Glyn Road – Enfield Town Station / Busy roads into Enfield then some respite in an air-con café.
Completed a busy day by travelling by train south to Whitechapel before heading home west on the Elizabeth Line.

Another day out, this time to Essex / North-East London with the priority a ride or two on RM Scanias, particularly in the light of forthcoming changes to the 248, and a few LU / LO bits and pieces
Scanias seem to provoke many different emotions on the forum (!!), all I’ll say is and to quote Joni Mitchell “Don't it always seem to go / That you don't know what you got 'til it's gone”…
This was to be a day when I had very limited mobile data which was good and bad in equal measure.
345 066 Liverpool Street (LST)–Romford (RMF) – Really looking forward to later in the year taking an Elizabeth Line thru’ train from Ealing Broadway to Romford.
252 / 15004 / LX58 CEA / Romford Station – Elm Park Station / The plan was to wait at the stop at Romford Station and ride a Scania on the 248 but the first 248 to turn up was a stray ADL400 so I ignored it. Then a stray Scania on the 365 but I ending up boarding a stray Scania on the 252 – middle of the day and fairly quiet
21338 / District Line / Elm Park – Hornchurch / to pick up a couple of LU stations
256 / 10168 / SN63 JVT / Hornchurch Station – Hornchurch Town Centre – spent a bit of time in Hornchurch before…
370 / DW239 / LJ59 AEL / Queen’s Theatre – Wykeham Avenue / Very lazy as I could have walked but as I had time before my next sector, and to my credit I stayed on an additional stop where I was rewarded with an opportunity to visit to a well-known grocer
710 107 / London Overground / Emperson Park (EMP) – Upminster (UPM) / the line that as many readers will know is a little bit of a quirk linking Romford and Upminster with just one station (Emerson Park) in the middle – also the novelty of being in London but traveling on a single-line track – I was one of ten to board the train for the 4 minute ride to Upminster
248 / 15001 / LX58 CDV / Upminster Station – Moor Lane / I’d decided that I would head to Cranham on either a 248 or 346, whichever came first – that argument was immediately settled by a Scania appearing on the 248 and 15001 – a nice surprise! The ride was brief but enjoyable and I alighted at the last stop to watch 15001 t turn into the public car-park and rest…to be followed pleasingly by 15002.
346 / SE234 / YX15 XMM / Moor Lane – Corbets Tey Road / I waited and waited for a 346 but no 346…248s came and went and I started to wonder if the diversion that I’d seen earlier from the 248 had put paid to the 346 operation, but then an elderly couple came to the bus stop and I thought that as locals they’d know if the route had been suspended – no data, no LVF! – After 34 minutes SE234 pulled up for an uneventful if fairly busy trip as mainly seniors travelled into Upminster to do their Friday shopping, chores and errands. I alighted early as the traffic at the main crossroads south of Upminster Station was bad and that it’d give me a chance to position myself for a photo.
248 / 15036 / LX58 CGY / Upminster Station / St Lawrence Road – Upminster Bridge Station – The last of the three day’s three Scania rides and busy
21528 / District Line / Upminster Bridge – Upminster
357 046 / c2c / Upminster (UPM) – Barking (BKG) – At Barking, rail staff were being briefed on services using changed platforms which was in connection with the opening of Barking Riverside
Other bus routes new to me later in the day…
62 / 10317 / SN16 OJX / Upney Station – Barking Station 376 / SE95 / SN11 FGA / Upton Park Station – East Ham Station

Did a few end to ends on Monday, 1st Aug
Beginning of the day: grabbed a 9am beer with a friend at the royal standard pub at Blackheath. Great start to the day!
286 (Blackheath royal standard to Eltham station): only 10-12 stops but painfully slow journey as the bus got regulated for almost 5 min just before reaching well hall roundabout. Then again stopped just before Eltham station for driver change! Got frustrated and got off (as online I saw that the 314 had left) but luckily it hadn’t!
314 (Eltham station to new addington): believe this is the 3rd longest single decker route (after 246 and 358) and it’s quite quick despite the length! Starts off in Eltham and then has some pretty nice sections through elmstead woods and especially post Bromley. Enjoyed the route and this has been on my to do list for a long time so good to get it done finally
Quick hop into Costa as I had a 20 min gap for my next bus
464 (new addington to tatsfield): now the turn of a single door route and again a very picturesque one! Great drive through saltbox hill (it’s much more of a climb than I had thought) and also the drive into tatsfield to what is london’s highest bus stop. A must do if you are after picturesque routes
464 (tatsfield to Lebanon gardens): same bus same seat same experience
R2 (Lebanon gardens to biggin hill valley): got it so as to get to the terminus as it’s so hilly here
R2 (biggin hill valley to Orpington); very quick journey on a single door, single decker and the driver was well ahead of the timetable. As we got to PRU the dreaded regulation kicked in and we had a 4 min wait. Good route but the regulation was annoying as I just missed a B14. But my first R route completed and got 25 min for a “grand” kfc lunch
B14 (Orpington to bexleyheath shopping centre): another single door, single decker. because of the heat and lunch I was quite sleepy on this bus but has its good sections. Especially northbound through watery lane!
B15 (bexleyheath shopping centre to horn park): yet another single door single decker. the last of the B routes, the last bus in bexleyheath and Eltham so important landmark for me. Quite round the houses but not as much as the B12
Had a 10 min wait for the 160 on the south circular
160 (horn park to catford bridge): the roadworks at the burnt ash hill / baring lane junction we’re playing havoc with the route. Saw 3 consecutive 202s to Lee Green from the opposite side. Had done this route back in 2019
336 (catford bridge to locksbottom): aargh 1 more single deck single door bus. But last bus through catford! This is a very twisty and tight route (at one stage the 336 from the opposite side was 80% on the pavement!) and kudos to the drivers for remembering the route, I would have missed half the turns!
261 (PRU to Bromley south): had done Bromley south to lewisham a few weeks back so only had this bit to tick off. After a long string of single decks was super happy to get a DD!
208 (Bromley south to petts wood): had to get to petts wood so this was the best choice. Crossed the train tracks for the next one
273 (petts wood to lewisham): another single door, single deck (….) but more importantly the last route in lewisham! This is again extremely twisty and goes everywhere it seems. There are sections which could have been interesting but given the number of single decks and the heat I lost focus
So that’s 276 bus routes completed. I have now completed a huge swathe of inner S / SE London; have to go to Bromley for the next set of incomplete routes (352, 356, 367, 138, 119, 146), Chislehurst (R7), Orpington (all R routes bar R2, 353, 358), sidcup (R11) but frankly M bored with single decks so May do central London next time

I enjoyed reading your report and 276 routes completed is one heck of a lot, bravo! - I recently did C11 Brent Cross - Archway then after a coffee W5 Archway - Harringay Sainsbury's and it's grueling, particularly in the hot weather. Re your trip you should get extra points for having a beer at 9am in a pub that's also a bus stop (!) and regarding longest single-deckers 232 must be up there as one of the longest...?
