Has anyone received one of those bus surveys this year so far? The one where you get handed it when you get on and have to give it back when you get off?
They seen to spend a day on a while route. Just got one on Route N68

This is the regular TfL survey process where the surveyors are on a route all day in order to try to get a representative sample of journeys along a route. I think they try to do each route at least once in a year. This then helps TfL model where people are travelling to and from for the planning process. Clearly Oyster data helps too with boarding info but not alighting.

I've never received a bus survey on any route. I haven't yet received any this year, but last year, I received around 5 surveys, all on route 211!

Clearly Oyster data helps too with boarding info but not alighting. They are done once every 6 years on a bus route. They also now, make desperately sure that you hand them in even though you do not fill them in a they use it to work out loadings on a route at particular times. All the cards have ordered numbers on them and then when tehy collect them they note the stop on the card.

I've done this on the 120, and others here in the West/South-West when bashing, but can't remember which route(s) that was!

They're known as BODS (Bus Origin and Destination Stop) surveys. They're done once every 5 years normally, though this can vary if there is a diversion on when the survey is due, or if there is severe disruption on the day of the survey.
I personally haven't come across the surveyors for a while - think the last time was on the 466 when I was at college, so 2010/11ish.

It happens a lot when companies want to have an idea of timings, when they put in for a tender etc

I filled in one on the U3 a month or so ago. They were also doing the A10 the same day.

Some surveyors were on my 152. I can't remember if it was early this year or late last year

It happens a lot when companies want to have an idea of timings, when they put in for a tender etc It is TfL who have the surveys, so if required, they can make alterations when they put the route out for tender. I remember doing the survey on the 275 a year or so before the route was out for tender. On the other hand, oyster data, performance analysis are bigger factors to altering a service when it is being put out to tender. Having said that, the 275 had two PVR increases, and three timetable changes since the new contract in March 2012 (reactive and not proactive from TFL).

They were out on the 466 today. They should really not ask questions such as "What is your home postcode" and the postcode for your finishing point (In this case, my school) and ask more questions like "How would you rate the punctuality of the bus route on a scale of 1-10?
