I don't use this route often but I would like to nominate it for having the most unstable buses in London Those ELS have hardly any seats and get extremely hot! This is a extremely popular route is is crying out for bigger buses or double deckers.

It needs DDs IMO. I wish TFL could negotiate with Southwark Council about the low trees in Denmark Hill which can enable 42 to use DDs.

Boarding an ELS in the summer heat is like walking into an oven! Especially when you're stuck in traffic in Camberwell Green with no breeze from the windows, no air con, no nothing! And besides that, they're just generally crap anyway. The 42 is crying for different buses...
And on another not, I noticed a few months ago that ELS14 was refurbished but kept the same seats unlike the other ELS buses. Probably a late refurb for the extension I'm guessing?

Having had Omnitowns on the 284 for 7 Years they were horrid in the Summer. I personally preferred walking, I now avoid the 181 all the time in the Summer. Great in the winter though. Those ELS vehicles on the 42 are horrid like most of the junk single deckers inherited from East Thames Buses, the 132 narrowly escaped the DWFails. The 201 will be free from Trash in October. The only decent fleet were the double deckers. Where those Estates are being built in Walworth buses 42, 136 & 343 are going to get busier, if the 42 is not double decked overcrowding will get worse.

In addition ELS14 had its seats replaced last year. LOTs are very late...

I would have thought it would have somewhat the opposite effect as less properties are going up than what is coming down. Not saying that it won't still be a heavily populated area.

The 201's DW's aren't actually as bad as everyone says, generally, the majority are out on the route during the week while at weekends, more SE's appear due to being younger and I suppose drivers prefer them as well. I quite like the ELS buses though I agree they are stuffy - still doesn't beat the NBfL though lol.

Also better capacity. Was hoping a WS would've appeared on route if the numbers are on their blinds. I also like the ELS and had hoped that they would've ended up at AL at some point.

Even in the winter, they can be too hot to be in :/ I still like the vehicles though.

The ELS's currently on the 42 have had their day and it is ridiculous that such a busy route is restricted to single deckers, couldn't it just be extended the short distance to Herne Hill as Sunray Avenue isn't an ideal terminus anyway, various residential issues?
Or an extension via Dulwich Village to Crystal Palace would be even better!!

Isn't it possible for the 42 to get Es from the 453 after its conversion? There would be enough Es left over to go else where too.

I remember seeing a couple of DDs from the 1 work on the 42, but its been ages since that happened.
