There were some great bands in the 80s .... then there was Milli Vanilli! Except it wasn’t Milli Vanilli capitalomnibus was listening to 😉 I agree, although they did sing the same song after some years. Regardless of the older group of people that were singing, it was still a good tune.

Putting together a list is very difficult but number 1 never changes the lyrics in that song "would you exchange a walk on part in the war for a lead role in a cage?" in my humble opinion is the finest lyrics ever written. First time I've heard that cover but it's really good.

2,6,13,16,18 ... Not sure I could pick a top 20 ... supposed would have to pick the top 20 tracks from 2020 on Spotify.?. But don't think what I have played on there is a true reflection of my taste. Number 1 track was from a band I liked in 90s, but established early in original lockdown the lead singer had died in 2019 ... not well known band ... and was a cover ... most of their stuff was original. Very surprised to hear that they were my no1 band of the year, and no1 track of the year. Sometime interesting to know big brother is watching you!
What really surprised me was the decade I listened to most compared to other listeners was the 2000's, but the top track from that decade came in at no18, and is a real obscure chill out track. Were the 2000s music that bad, noone listens to it ... thought 80s or 90s would have been the answer!

Wish you were here I love Dignity as well as Real Gone Kid which is the other track I have from Deacon Blue - a classic and one I remember growing up in the 90's on the radio (they still played lots of 80's music during the 90's). I also have Fast Car by Tracy Chapman as well as Baby Can I Hold You. Some of the other bands are not my thing but a good list nevertheless.

Guess it depends on the listener - for instance, majority of my music is from the 80's and then the 90's. I suppose a lot of the big soundtracks being from the 80's and some from the 90's helps as I'd imagine many people remember songs from big films?

I tried not to pick two or more songs from the same artists when doing the list but "Baby can I hold you" could have easily been chosen. Had a look at your list which I realise was written some years back, I like Genesis and Duran Duran my favourites being "follow you follow Me" and Ordinary World. Can't say I'm the biggest Eminem fan compared to most people but I do think Stan is a very good song.

Yeah, that list might need some additions but Duran Duran & Genesis (1980-1992 period) are still my fave bands - I grew out of Eminem a while back but I don't remove old music for memories and nostalgic purposes

You say that, maybe not a massive film, but the track that was my no1 last year according to Spotify was the theme tune to the 1995 film Clueless. But was still quite shocked to be told this!

I’m gonna guess it was either Change by The Lightning Seeds or Alright by Supergrass. At a push it might be Kids in America by The Muffs.

During early part of original lockdown, tried to rediscover some of the bands I was into in the late 80s, early 90s, as I realised they were very badly represented on my Spotify. Early and mid 80s plenty of coverage, then you hit the Britpop/grunge era, plenty of coverage, but there was a hole poorly represented.

Kim Wilde had the original in 1981, The Muffs had the 1991 cover which featured in Clueless. I prefer The Muffs version, it has a rock edge to it.

It was discovering that the lead singer died in 2019, sent me on a Muffs frenzy, and discovered plenty of work that was released in the US and never made it to the UK (as far as I can tell) ... RIP Kim Shattuck 1963-2019 ... only ever saw her live once! Only time I had really heard of her in the 2010's was that brief episode where she replaced Kim Deal as the bass player in The Pixies in 2013, but think she was a little too wild for them!
