You are correct . It will be 4 when they take over TPE. 5, if you include Scotrail. Include TfW and Caledonian Sleeper and you get 7.

Good riddance, First have been horrendous at running the TransPennine Express franchise. Even though some of the problems they've suffered haven't been their fault, such as the May 2018 timetable change which was caused by Network Rail not issuing the new timetable in good time and poor rail infrastructure in the north, their management have made some very poor decisions. Not least the decision to order three different fleets of new trains from two manufacturers when the Class 802's are cleared to go pretty much anywhere on their network apart from the South TPE route and have suffered far less faults than the Class 397's or Mark 5 sets have. And their handling of industrial relations was a major problem even before the pandemic. Whilst the OLR won't immediately improve things, they seem to have stabilised Northern which was suffering quite badly before they stepped in. Equally they could also make things worse as was evident with Southeastern's utterly shambolic December timetable change. Absolutely agree with you. I do worry the burden of another franchise under OLR is going to strain the view of DfT and Ministers even further against rail.

The passengers won't notice the difference then It's an awful mess, but I think it's a way for the Government to roll out Great British Railways branding to all of their increasing State Run franchises (OLRs) as a test bed, and others will follow suit with a livery later. It's interesting that this seems to be a direct Ministerial decision as First had been improving a little. But it shows the unions will drive the Tories out by next year, it's not looking good for a Government investigating itself over things it did wrong in Covid with lives and money unnecessarily lost I wonder which Franchise will go next? They don't seem to last long, like managers at Chelsea

These could be the newest trains withdrawn for very many years. Newer than 1983 stock and class 379s. I did ride one from Manchester Piccadilly to Huddersfield in April 2022. Some later came to the South Pennine route via Stockport but I have never used one on this route. Mine in July were both 185s, which truth be told are more comfortable.
