I'm probably going to be in a minority here but I actually don't think Croydon is that bad and I think the 197 is generally quite a pleasant route. Bromley for example is often heralded as a much nicer place but there have been similar problems there including a ban on under 16s without parents or guardians at The Glades shopping centre because of anti social behaviour... www.newsshopper.co.uk/news/23548947.glades-bromley-shopping-centre-ban-kids-16/I haven't watched any videos of this incident on the 197 but for a driver to be saying something like that is pretty unprofessional to say the least. My local decathlon bans under 18s from shopping without an adult. Though this is never enforced. Anti social behavior exists everywhere in London but Croydon has a bit of a bad reputation in London I used to fix tills for House of Fraser in Croydon, one day one of the "mandem" stormed up to the counter (I was an engineer fixing one of the tired HP computers that had packed up under the counter) and he was brandishing a large knife demanding a refund for some jeans he bought. Tried to tell him I wasn't staff but he was having none of it. Luckily I was able to escape and hid in the Lingerie department where I managed to give him the slip

My opinion.... I feel safer in Peckham than Croydon. South Norwood is another place that is pretty run down, Penge is very slowly getting better. Dulwich is posh and Forest Hill also generally ok these days. I don’t dislike the route but the worst part of it is definitely Penge - Croydon.

I live there and it is a shithole. I regularly ask myself am I sane in the head after moving back here when I left Yorkshire. Probably was a mistake. Moving is such a pain in the ass, it will be my home! Croydon is Haringey's dirty cousin there are some nice parks in Croydon, it's a shame Westfield never came to the area as the shopping malls in Croydon need some TLC but as the only place in London to see trams, it's OK. There are nice parts like Upper Norwood and the leafy streets of Whyteleafe, but West Croydon and Thornton Heath are best avoided after dark Love the stock photo of the tired DW, with all fleetnames edited out. Gotta love the journalism. Kudos to the 197 driver Upper Norwood isn't very nice in my opinion. I once went shopping in the Sainsbury's there and had to use the bathroom there (which wasn't actually inside the Sainsbury's store but next to it near the street) and the bathrooms were disgusting and in very poor condition. Besides there were some very creepy men in there too. Crystal Palace is quite nice especially the park. South Norwood I'm not too sure about, but Thornton Heath definitely reeks of deprivation. I'd even say that parts of Tooting and Streatham look run down too.

F Idiot for a pair of jeans… It was bad enough the risk of being stabbed by the various pins attatched to the security tags for clothes that cashiers had just thrown under the counter, without zombie knives being waved in your face... it's a common occurrence in less affluent parts of town. Matalan in Dalston is just as bad for shoplifting, but more blatant as they either wrestle with the (often overweight) security guard on his own while next man grabs jeans or trousers... TBH all of London is getting worse thanks to Sadiq Khan... I would welcome Low Crime Neighbourhoods if he ever brought that in

Do you really have to use such language to describe places such as Croydon? Pretty sure we have forum members from there who wouldn’t appreciate you describing the place they live in such a tone. I live there and it is a shithole. I regularly ask myself am I sane in the head after moving back here when I left Yorkshire. Probably was a mistake. Moving is such a pain in the ass, it will be my home! That's fair enough and it seems members agree with you regarding Croydon. I just think northlondon83 its very judgemental of certain parts of London, I live in one of the most deprived boroughs but its my home and wouldn't like to read people making comments like the place is a sh*thole.

There’s been a whole situation these past 2 years with areas such as Southside and Clapham Junction banning school kids and the police getting involved because of how terrible the behaviour is, although I don’t know if this is still going on.

I find Upper Norwood fine TBH, lots of lovely residential roads - Croydon, Thornton Heath, Peckham (especially Rye Lane), Harlesden are all what I’d class as not nice at all. New Addington is one where if you removed all the people, it would be a cracking area Can’t say I’d agree with Streatham or Tooting however especially how much I’ve used the former over the years

www.mylondon.news/news/south-london-news/london-bus-driver-comeback-viral-27009774?int_source=nbaA funny and interesting bus story. I don't think it was the most appropriate way for the bus driver to tell the passenger to get off the bus but it still worked! I'm not surprised it happened on the 197 considering the sh*tholes it passes on either end of the route (especially Croydon) It must be noted though that this is an article from My London who often publish satirical and wacky articles. I had to laugh, I find it hilarious, although I can understand the serious nature of it.

Funnily enough there is a Sainsbury's by Selhurst Park stadium that says ''Crystal Palace ' on the entrance to the store as opposed to Selhurst or Thornton Heath

I saw a video yesterday of youths attacking one guy in a Chicken shop with knives, and you wonder why Bromley has done this… because of people who spoil it for everyone. I believe the under 16s ban was in place for this past Friday only. There was a very serious incident when schools finished up for Easter with large scale fights and reports of water pistols filled with acid being fired indiscriminately at people. With rumours surfacing of a repeat The Glades acted together with local police to restrict entry to the shopping centre and indeed there was a very large police presence on Friday afternoon I’m at a loss to explain the behaviour of an increasing number of young people. There’s a growing sense of arrogance and self-entitlement. So many of them feel like they do whatever the hell they like and to hell with the consequences. I wouldn’t have dreamed of acting the way they do when I was their age but there is just no respect for anyone or anything anymore and I have no idea what the solution is
