Croydon is Haringey's dirty cousin there are some nice parks in Croydon, it's a shame Westfield never came to the area as the shopping malls in Croydon need some TLC but as the only place in London to see trams, it's OK. There are nice parts like Upper Norwood and the leafy streets of Whyteleafe, but West Croydon and Thornton Heath are best avoided after dark Love the stock photo of the tired DW, with all fleetnames edited out. Gotta love the journalism. Kudos to the 197 driver Upper Norwood isn't very nice in my opinion. I once went shopping in the Sainsbury's there and had to use the bathroom there (which wasn't actually inside the Sainsbury's store but next to it near the street) and the bathrooms were disgusting and in very poor condition. Besides there were some very creepy men in there too. Crystal Palace is quite nice especially the park. South Norwood I'm not too sure about, but Thornton Heath definitely reeks of deprivation. I'd even say that parts of Tooting and Streatham look run down too. I know the Sainsburys you mean, I can remember it being Safeway years ago, I don't think I've ever used the toilets there though. Apart from the park and a small museum there's nothing much in Crystal Palace, some parts of Upper Norwood are quite upmarket with some nice views, I can't think of anything good to say about Thornton Heath though.

Isn't Sainsbury's Upper Norwood in Crystal Palace? It is on the Upper Norwood side of the Crystal Palace Triangle I’m old enough to remember when that Sainsbury’s in Upper Norwood was briefly a Morrisons and before that a Somerfield. I remember Somerfield, which was Budgens re branded. When I was around Upper Norwood, it was back in '98, dating a girl who lived near Convent Hill (great views of London, though painful getting up Knights Hill on Arriva's tired Metrobuses on the 68A (forerunner to the 468) or taking a ride on the equally tired Olympians (stuck in 1st gear to climb the hill from West Norwood) - this was when the buses had their Cowie Yellow Stripes livery but new Arriva logos. Croydon was more genteel then, but I think like most parts of London, lawlessness has seeped in, overseen by a Mayor asleep at the switch I don't miss people arguing with the driver for being 20p short thanks to cashless travel where everyone has to tap in... the red Wayfarer light and 'beep-beep' is enough for most sane people to get off the bus and admit defeat

Funnily enough there is a Sainsbury's by Selhurst Park stadium that says ''Crystal Palace ' on the entrance to the store as opposed to Selhurst or Thornton Heath Never heard anyone refer to that Sainsbury's as Upper Norwood, it's always been known as Crystal Palace even when it was previously a Somerfield and Morrisons. I went to Palace a lot as a kid because we had family friends who lived on the Central Hill Estate next to the old police station and it was always referred to as Crystal Palace with Upper Norwood encompassing the big residential areas west & south of there and including Crown Point & the now no longer used place name of Norwood New Town

Yes the views on Beulah Hill looking west are really nice. The views down Anerley Hill are quite good too. Anerley in itself isn't a bad area in London, however across your borough of Bromley there are a lot more upmarket areas. Besides connections by train into central London aren't great, unless I'm mistaken only the Overground stops there? Although you do have national rail from Crystal Palace to Victoria and London Bridge. South London travel is quite limited due to the fact that most areas are inaccessible by tube and those that have a rail station can in most cases only access the termini and also rail fares are more expensive than tube fares

Believe it ceased to exist around 2012. Same with Woolworths I believe it closed around that time

Whats antisocial about youths on bikes pulling wheelies? You can get pulled over for it as it is dangerous to do on the highway, especially if you lose control. Can easily end with someone underneath a car etc. Bikes pulling wheelies are dangerous but another far worse culprit is e scooters especially those who ride down the middle of the road or pull out of side roads into on coming traffic.

My memory of the Safeway was it went Safeway > Somerfield > Morrison .... Morrison then sold the smaller shops onto Coop, although they were generally big for Coop **EDIT** Actually got that wrong, it was Morrisone that sold the smaller stores to Somerfield, which was then absorbed by Coop

Morrison the sold the smaller shops onto Coop, although they were generally big for Coop I think you’re a bit confused, Morrisons never owned Somerfield. Somerfield did acquire just over 100 ex-Safeway stores from Morrisons in 2004. Morrisons of course purchased Safeway as a method of expanding south, the notable acquisitions in South London were Wimbledon, Sutton, Mitcham and Peckham. Before Morrisons bought out Safeway they were pretty much exclusively Northern based. But Somerfield was its own business until 2008 when it was acquired by Co-Op and slowly rebranded.

Think it was just a rebrand ... wiki supports this, but that's never gospel.

Wow they've gone longer ago than I thought! I remember my Woolworths in Uxbridge became a Poundland, whilst the Woolworths in Ruislip became a Tesco Express, something we have too much of on our high streets. (Would rather see independent bookshops and businesses thrive rather than be swallowed by big brand shops)

I remember Gateway - used to be big across The South. We had a Bejam in Northfields, which then became Budgens, and now Tesco Metro occupies the space Co-op has really gone upmarket, and you'll see them in the more affluent parts of town.

I find Co-op is very convenient of you want to do a quick stop and it is there. Can be out of there in 5 minutes. Sometimes it isn’t worth going out of the way to go to Sainsbury’s or Tesco because it is slightly cheaper.
