Today as I was walking out of Catford Garage a notice caught my eye saying 'Route 136- extension to Elephant & Castle'.
I didn't read the rest of the notice because I was due out and didn't want to be late because I was handing over to a different driver at NX. I will read it properly tomorrow when I'm on the 171. Does anyone else know anything about this? (I didn't notice this notice yesterday when I was walking out).
My idea/thoughts are it follows the 343 routing to Elephant & Castle, thus giving extra capacity on that routing and reliving some of the pressure on the 343. It is a very long extension IMO. I doubt it will go the 63/363 routing as those roads are quite norrow and it would add extra buses to the Old Kent Road/ New Kent Road which is rather busy inbetween the am and pm peaks

I never knew about this but it seems like it's a good thing. IMO, 199 should have got the extension to Elephant & Castle as it is a shorter route but the Greenwich traffic could corrupt that. New Cross and Peckham both already have lots of links to get to Elephant & Castle and the majority of the routes there are high frequency so I don't see why 136 should be extended there. If TFL want to extend 136, then maybe they should extend it to Chislehurst War Memorial from Grove Park.

I doubt it will go the 63/363 routing as those roads are quite norrow and it would add extra buses to the Old Kent Road/ New Kent Road which is rather busy in between the am and pm peaks I'll certainly be interested to see if the prospect of an extension is genuine. If your guess about routing over the 343 is correct then it would take 5 extra buses at existing frequencies. That's quite an increase unless there is a proposal to trim the 343's PVR a bit. Based on comments from others there might not be a lot of point in terminating another route at Elephant. I know it would take extra buses (two probably) but providing a link through Waterloo to, say, Aldwych might relieve some of the interchange pressure at Elephant and cause a redistribution of passengers off the 343 to the 136. It would also give a sort of "West End" link to Peckham and Lewisham.

I'm going with the theory that this is more about providing relief to the 343 than the Elephant-Lewisham link, welcome though that will be. I'd be very surprised, given the song & dance about the 343, if it didn't go through North Peckham.

Interesting ...
Given how the 343 struggles with loadings it definitely needs some help, and I don't think 6 extra bph would be that excessive.

I wonder if this extension does go ahead, will the 109 get some help as like the 343, it was mentioned in the same report as having overcrowding problems.

Tfl have got to do something with the issues the report has raised. If this extension is true i am hoping we are seeing a genuine improvement from tfl , but also.mindful that cuts could be made elsewhere to balance the books

Good news if true. Relieves the pressure on the 343 in North Peckham and the Aylesbury Estate towards Elephant and Peckham while giving new connections to other parts of SE London.
It'll also release capacity at Peckham Bus Station, which could be used to terminate another route.

I went into Catford Garage today and in this notice's place was a notice saying TB has driver vacancies for the new routes! I'm sorry to get anyone's hopes up with more info, but as The Urbanite says it is not meant to be public knowledge, so we will have to wait and see!!
(Note to self- next time I see a notice, read the whole thing!!!)

Curses! - still there are at least 2 people on this group with a close involvement with the management of Catford Garage so perhaps no surprise the notice has been whisked away!
