I've often thought do garages have what they call flagship routes. If they do some are obvious like RP is the 18, CT is the 38. But what would AFs or FW be? I would have thought it would be the route with the lowest running numbers? FW have the 281 with single digits. Trust me, no-one, at any point in time, has ever called the 4 a flagship route. Not even London Suburban when they only had three routes! (It has used running numbers HT1+ since 1996)

The flagship route would be high pvr, and high contract value. i.e the 38 is the flagship route for Arriva London. You've beaten me to it. I was going to say exactly the same - high PVR, high contract cost (and thus high potential earnings). Doubly so if the route is *so* large, like the 38, that no one else bids for it which means there is an opportunity for higher £ per km bid prices. It all really boils down to money. I have to say that I am very sceptical these days that any garages are run on the basis of having flagship routes. I rather suspect routes are run to maximise their profitability and not much else. That may sound brutal but I don't see much scope for sentiment these days in having routes that somehow get preferential treatment. Everything has to be run to squeeze every last pence of profitability out of it. I suspect controllers have a list of "bleepy bleep awful to run" routes that are a daily nightmare to get right.

In addition: Arriva (TC): 312 Abellio (BC): 109 or 407

When do 'iconic' and 'flagship' align? I notice the 73 has only had one mention so far, on the basis of being SF's flagship route. That would have been unthinkable even three or four years ago, but shows it's a shadow of its former self. As for no 227, well, I despair! Former Bus Route of the Year more than once, etc. Those Citaros didn't get there by chance!
