What's everyone expecting the HS2 review to conclude? Of course there is ample speculation circulating that the project is set to be scrapped by what do you think?

Money and politics will stop HS2 if they Are spending the same amount of money why not just invest in the current railway frastructure i.e WCML

I have to agree with vjaska That's why the money should be invested on the WCML if the government want to ease overcrowding they should spend the money on the WCML not vanity project like HS2.

Sorry but I don't understand what you mean, the WCML is at full capacity with no room for anymore trains so how can overcrowding be eased other than by building HS2? And why do so many things get called vanity projects nowadays?

The lack of capacity means adding a pair of tracks, widening existing line wasn't possible due to too much adjacent property so decided to build on new alignment. That part was essential. The Vanity Project is the excessive add-ons. Does it really need to be aligned for 220+mph trains, does it really need a tunnel to replace existing underused alignment through Northolt etc.

The existing WCML can be horrendously overcrowded, anybody fancy standing for two hours plus? Here we have a solution but oh hang on, people don't like that either. Many countries in mainland Europe have high speed rail networks that we can only dream of.

Of course people are allowed to disagree but it might help if they explained their reasoning.

I don't know about others but my reasoning for being against HS2 is better to get the existing network sorted in general before you start partaking in building high speed lines across the country.

Expanding the existing WCML, will have to be done whilst it is open ... which again needs property purchases, but not being a green field site allowing 24/7 access ... would mean many years of delays to existing WCML users and neighbourhoods bordering the railway as it is widened, bridges rebuilt. There is no easy choice here ... someone somewhere is going to get inconvenienced. Other countries successfully run HS lines, if we are going to have years of inconvenience, should we not end up ... eventually ... with a world class railway. Can you honestly say HS1 has been a failure ... initially very capital intensive, and financial calamity for the operators, but now seems to be regarded as a success.

Upgrading the existing WCML is a non starter and the only solution to overcrowding is HS2. As you say HS1 is now a great success and there was similar criticism about that being built.

The WCML is the not the entire railway in the UK which is what I’m referring to.

My main issue with HS2 is that it’s often seen as an “either/or” scenario — if it gets dropped I’m skeptical about whether the ~£50-80bn would actually be spent on the “classic” network.
Given that construction has started on Phase 1, should there be any cost cutting, maybe the scope would be reduced (a lower maximum speed for instance). On the extreme end we could have Phase 2 scaled back (no eastern branch for instance).
While I am generally in favour of HS2 I also believe we should have other regional projects (electrification, capacity upgrades) running alongside.
