Stupid decision but nothing new from this government - I've heard but not if it's been confirmed that HS2 will still reach Manchester but between Birmingham & Manchester, it will use existing lines? I think the whole thing is a waste of money just spend it on existing infrastructure! I wouldn't be surprised if it would use existing lines.

It is interesting though and another way to back Labour into a corner. If Labour commit to fully implementing it if they win the next general and then discover they can’t do it then it becomes even more embarrassing for them. Just another way to embarrass a likely incoming government.

Might as well bin the whole thing. In all fairness HS2 was always a pie in the sky idea. Way too expensive. Might as well use the money for localised links Politicians in this country are only good at lying to people and turning back on their promises

Disappointing news but it’s not unexpected. I really hope they continue the line to Euston or all the whole thing becomes even more of a farce! So many houses and businesses have been lost already as a result of this and if that part of the project is scrapped then it was a total waste.

Why is it faster to get to France than Manchester? The only real winner out of this, no matter what else is announced is British Airways and the Spanish economy.

According to Sky News it will be fully implemented to Euston to appease some critics. Unfortunately though northern politicians will likely use this as another attack on the south. It makes sense as, like you say, so many buildings have already been demolished in the area and provisions have already been placed for the tunnels to Euston with tunnelling machinery ordered. Cancelling the Euston stretch would probably cost more to cancel at this point than it would to complete.

Hs2 better be finished because the digging up Greenford Road would be for nothing.

Labour have already said they are committed to building it to Manchester which is the right thing - of course, if they backtrack, they'll get just as much flak for it and rightly so. There is no point acquiring all the land (including homes that were as young as just 4-5 years old) and start building the southern leg if your not going to finish the most important bit which is the bit north of Birmingham

Can't imagine they're being backed into a corner, Labour's policies have gone from being untenable in around 2019 to becoming realistic now since they're very quickly becoming a government in waiting. I'd be shocked if Labour blindly made this promise without scrutinising finances themselves.

Like planning to remove charitable status of private schools and then no longer doing that two days later. How long before Kier Starmer has no more stability than an ice cube in the sun?

All governments lie, it’s just we live in an age of clickbait journalism so this has only become prevalent knowledge in the last decade as media outlets strive to remain relevant, visible and financially viable. Nobody seemed to care when Tony Blair took us into an illegal war based in a lie or when Margaret Thatcher lied to miners. This is the worst time in living memory for any side to form a government because they will all be plagued by lies and falsities.

I say this as a big supporter of HS2, but unfortunately can't see things progressing on this front for 10+ years whoever comes to power.
As with all things in this country, we can not do things to the standards of other countries and have to go for the gold plated standard on everything (both parties have a history of this). This increases costs to astronomical levels and why everything is so expensive.
Once the budget is gone, there is not a big money pot at the moment ... the country is financially on it knees. If Labour was to reinstate it, it would need to have huge amounts of funding taken from elsewhere. Where would you take it from? They can conveniently blame the current government for HS2 stopping, where as they would be responsible for other cuts if they were to reinstate it. I would be amazed if Labour made reinstating HS2 a policy, as it would have unpleasant repercussions you have to sell to the public.

The UK government is weak willed and cannot keep its promises. That’s the message this sends out to the world and to businesses looking to invest.
We look at the cost of building HS2, but we don’t look at the cost of not building it. The UK is penny wise, pound foolish. To be fair, London already has decent links to Birmingham. And we’re still getting HS2 because of the stupid decision to start work in the south and kick the economically hardest part of the project in the north down the road.
The people I feel for are in the north. Journeys like Leeds to Manchester are horrible for such a small distance and should be much faster and more reliable. Better infrastructure in the north like HS2 and the so called Northern Powerhouse would have lead to more businesses and people choosing to be based there, rather than jobs and people all flowing into the south.
Spare a thought for all those duped northerners who bought into the hollow promise of the “Northern Powerhouse”, 40 new hospitals and “levelling up”. What a slap in the face to the electorate. We vote for political parties, not prime ministers. Therefore the party elected has a responsibility to deliver on the manifesto it was elected upon. Absolute shambles.

Are you blind to the absolute mess the Tories have made of this country from austerity up until now? Seriously, the UK is on its knees. People in other countries are looking at the UK in bewilderment at the level of dysfunction we have. Words are cheap. Look at the actions and outcomes of those who actually had the power to lead this country. Is the UK a better place now compared to 13 years ago? I’m not saying Labour are the answer, but surely they cannot do worse than the current lot. Nitpicking over something hypothetical and not even in a manifesto is a minor matter compared to 13 years of failure, u-turns, lies, and hypocrisy (lockdown rules anyone?).
