I'll go further - in about 2 weeks time, I suspect we'll see a lockdown similar to Italy where all travel is restricted barring special permission and the only places open being supermarkets & pharmacies. According to reports, the government are apparently considering doing one so we'll have to wait and see. Looks like Boris wants to put the lockdown off for another 10 or so weeks. Can't see some people playing by the rules! I know what my part of London is like and people here will pretty much stick fingers up to any rules and go out.
And this is exactly the problem. In two to three weeks time, if a lockdown of sorts is attempted, well good luck .. that in itself could spell more problems and cause actual casualties just like the virus. Personally can't see it being a totally effective measure. I would lock down care homes and have government take over food delivery van firms temporarily to provide guaranteed levels of groceries to the vulnerable. I think we all need to see this as a fight. Protect our more vulnerable from this nasty virus, everyone can make it difficult for it to spread, make our world a hostile place for it. It will soon f@@k off

It will soon f@@k off Some sort of lockdown might be necessary when this peaks but it's going to need the cooperation of the public, I don't think there is any need for it at the moment and it would probably be largely ignored anyway and the police wouldn't have the resources to enforce it. I think Boris has dealt with it quite well so far, he's obviously not a doctor and doesn't pretend to be and is very much reliant on chief medical officer Chris Witty. Personally I've always used hand sanitiser when I've been out, I wash my hands with soap and water more often and try to avoid crowded places, no point taking unnecessary risks but other than that I've carried on as normal. Obviously I'm more concerned for elderly relatives but the kids aren't at any great risk. I don't mean to sound flippant about it but I don't think we need to over react either, I don't personally know anybody who has the virus and hopefully that remains the case. Just heed medical advice and carry on, there is talk of a ban on mass gatherings from next week.

TFL should ban overcrowded travel, seating positions only or get off the bus, but then again made me think that this would basically cause overcrowding in bus stops, but that's better than being on eachother toes in a bus. But I think it's only gonna get worse now, garages finally handing out hand sanitizers to drivers.

The general consensus seems to be among the public that Boris hasn't dealt with it well and that a lockdown or other more drastic measures needs to be taken sooner rather than later. Virologists are also repeating that they are surprised the government is not taking more drastic action.

Another email has gone out to staff from bus companies. TfL has asked to prepare for things like scheduling Sunday/Saturday services on weekdays if staff numbers are too low, "low priority" routes being suspended and guidance in the event of a suspension of TfL services which could be phased or sudden. Last but not least, if a driver suspects a customer to be ill and showing symptoms of coronavirus, the bus must be "contained", passengers must not allowed to leave and emergency services to be informed via code red immediately. Good luck stopping customers from forcing their way out...! Heard nothing about this at my company?.....but it there is meant to be hand gel and there isn’t any, so it wouldn’t surprise me that things are moving in this direction.

Opinions vary, many people are still dismissing this as scaremongering including some people on this thread. I wouldn't go as far as to say that but other than washing my hands more often and avoiding crowded areas as far as possible I'm going about my normal day to day life. Obviously if people wish to isolate themselves they can. It's a dynamic situation and I'll just play it by ear but I'd rather listen to medical experts than people trying to score political points.

A relative just told me supermarkets are running extremely low on basics so people are still panic buying. We are really in interesting times!

Yep, all three Beckton Superstores are running incredibly low and the toiletries Aisle in the Tesco was completely blocked off. This is just totally ridiculous now.

There are plenty of people on social media who clearly are out to score political points and the photos of empty shelves at their local supermarket are just going to encourage the panic buying that they are complaining about.

We have to tell customers to come at 7 in the morning and join the queue because otherwise, you’ve no chance unless you know a member of staff personally who could put some by.

I have been out to try and buy basics but have given up today. Will try in the morning! Most bizarre experiences seeing shop staff in masks but understandable.

To be pedantic, neither the election nor the Marathon have been cancelled, they’ve been postponed. Secondly, numbers on public transport have decreased in many area’s & many large organisations are insisting that staff work from home. My personal perception on the CoronaVirus is that the media have successfully duped the general public with scaremongering. I’m a train driver with respiratory issues (Asthma & a Heart Murmur) I’m not remotely worried about it, I switch my cab air con off and drive with the window open, I followed this method prior to the scare and will continue to do so, mainly because it keeps me alert. Seeing the masses go out and empty the shops saddens me because the vast majority of the elderly who go shopping during the day go without. The coronavirus is likely set to send the economy into recession, I personally don’t see the point in the county going into lockdown, however, I do feel that BoJo’s address to the country was a little to lax for my liking. OK yes I worded it wrong , postponed! same outcome the events not happening in the next few weeks. OK yes you might not be worried and that's fine BUT and this is the big BUT what I don't think people appreciate that you could catch the virus and pass onto a elderly person without realising before the symptoms show.
I’m aware of the detrimental affect it has on the elderly and those with underlining health issues. Seeing people travelling on the tube wearing masks which are doing anything except create fear and hysteria (my opinion) I watched a man on the 04:00 to London from Welwyn, board the train wearing a mask, the unit had been thoroughly cleaned and then berthed and secured until I liven the unit at 03:45 this morning. He then removed the mask took a sip of his drink and then put the mask back on. Some of the masks being used have a short life use, each their own but the scaremongering and hysteria with people buying way too much is unbelievable and I feel for those less fortunate than most unable to purchase basic necessities.

I agree with you in regards to masks which are practically useless for protection - as you mention, disposable masks need to be thrown away after a period of time - roughly 30 mins - whilst other masks would need to be constantly cleaned. Regularly cleaning hands & wearing gloves where possible is really the only protection. I also agree with you in regards to the panic buying which is beginning to stretch supply which simply can’t keep up with demand. Some people are even buying it to profit out of others misery - I’ve found toilet roll on eBay at £100.
