As an 'enthusiast', I would rather travel on diesel as IMHO they do have more character and have to make the most of them in London as they are slowly on the way out. But if I was writing as a 'civilian' I would plump for EV and was particularly taken with the Abellio BYD Enviro Citys on the 63 and U5 when I first rode on them; for me, a step-change in passenger experience. Who knows, maybe as they get on they might become more interesting? They'll be around for 14 years, mind, so they could become quite interesting as each bus ages.
I would argue the removal of the engine isn't the reason why electric buses are less interesting? If there weren't so many 20 zones and the city wasn't as congested as it is, you could have electric buses thrash their way down roads.
Kickdown is a thing of the past because modern gearbox software can be configured to hold gears long enough to provide good acceleration
I agree with you good to see something different at Ilford new electric buses and Soon be 86 and new Superloop coming I grow up and raised Ilford all my childhood. Moved out the area now my local routes 267 237 235 65 110 N9 H91 Kew bridge area

Hopefully they put some decent shops on Brentford High Street soon with the new Ballymore development Back to topic, have the new ES's for the 279 arrived yet?

But they do not work in anyway near the same as the proper kickdown facility. Put pedal to floor on many modern buses and there is now way you would gain that instant torque, quick downshift and rapid acceleration. Remember many of these engines are from HGV's where the demand for things like this is greater. Also in other countries abroad where there is none of this eco nonsense, they still have very rapid buses. In North America you can get some very spirited drives and fast kickdown.

They probably don't and makes my original post look factual when it was not intended in that way. i suspect Buses678 was trying to agree with my thinking but might not have used the wrong wording.
I agree with what Eastlondoner62 said in reply to my post but do think long term the area will probably be redeveloped.
it's a fairly big site so could be redeveloped even though the surrounding area is pretty light industrial- certainly didn't stop some of the early redevelopment of Silvertown and Gallions Reach being a stones throw from Beckton Sewage Works. As for Beckton Sewage works, I cannot think of anywhere else as revolting to live, absolute stinker.

Beddington Lane is in the same situation, massive sewage works and it always stinks to high heaven when passing through on the bus

I'm glad it's not just me that's noticed it.

The only reason that bus fleets have been replaced after 14 years is that newer/better/cleaner tech is available. Who's to say that will continue? Difficult to improve on zero emission - these EVs might have a 30 year life for all we know.

I very much doubt they will have a 30 year lifespan - buses aren't built to last that long unlike in the 50's to 80's and I imagine they will achieve a similar lifespan to the current stock before being replaced by even more advanced electric vehicles (better range in particular)

Things like batteries will get smaller with better storage capacity, just as engines got smaller on diesel vehicles. Then it’s inevitable that someone will create new tech that doesn’t require lithium.

According to a comment on The Londoner FB Page by Peter Horrex, there are major works taking place to rectify the issues with the chargers at E for 2 weeks. I'd assume we could see a full EV operation on the 307 by end of October.

Here's hoping some of the 5 series DWs ousted from the 307 can find homes on the 123 to replace the tired DWs like 463 and 472

Beddington Lane is in the same situation, massive sewage works and it always stinks to high heaven when passing through on the bus Beddington Lane is terrible, basically a fly tipping spot for Lambeth, Wandsworth, Merton, Croydon and Sutton I still remember the time it was closed last year for several months. Despite Crossness being close by, I rarely notice any smell in Thamesmead, even then mostly around Yarnton Way closest to the works.

Crossness is right up the top of SE London, and with prevailing winds coming from the west, generally to catch any smell you need to be around Rainham Marshes. It can get a bit stinky across much of the north of Bexley Borough with a cold wind from the north.
