I just feel like Oxford Circus would be a better terminus for the 8 tbh. Feelings have nothing to do with it. The constant desire to rip up, extend and shorten routes is beyond obsessive sometimes. The reason you see that is because the 8 isn't used by people going to Oxford Circus who get off earlier and wait for the 98. That doesn't mean that demand isn't there from the 8s route because there is due to the close proximity of the City.

At least some of the ideas we come up on this forum is better than what TFL has done over the past few years.

I think it was in 2003 in readiness for the 2004 tender that it had been considered but would have led to 1000 broken links. Whilst I doubt even then there would have been a massive demand for Ilford to Oxo I can imagine a fair few Manor Park/Forest Gate journeys to Bank/Holborn which would have been broken. I was quite surprised in 2002 it wasn't split then in readiness for the CC. Had that actually happened, I’m pretty sure there would have been some backlash. But I actually don’t think it’s a bad idea, as long as it’s executed well. The 2004 tender took place on the 26th of June that year. I believe it was on the same day as the bus changes that took place in the Ilford/Gants Hill/Barkingside areas. What was the list of changes that happened that day? The 128 was extended from Ilford to Claybury, the 150 extend from Ilford to Becontree Heath. 129 withdrawn. The 296 I think was moved out of the Hainault Street stand. N25 withdrawn. 24h service introduced. Replaced by the N8 which diverted at Gants Hill to Hainault (withdrawn between Gants Hill and Newbury Park and new N86 Stratford to Harold Hill. The N55 was extended to Wanstead then over the N8 to Woodford Wells.

You would have thought that would have removed years earlier! Though had the 25 split had happened, things might have been different. Would the N8 still be running to Woodford Wells? Would the N25 back in the early 2000s still be running to this day? Who knows?

I did wonder at the time (no doubt it was due to wanting to have bendy buses on the night service which till 2006 didn't end up happening on N services which went beyond the day route) why the N25 wasn't simply made Oxo to Hainault with the N86 taking over the Harold Hill leg with the N8 Victoria to Woodford Wells.

If the 25 split had happened here’s what I believe would have happened: 25: Revised to run between Oxford Circus & Stratford. 425: This version of the route would run between Ilford & London Bridge, replacing the Ilford leg of the 25. N25: Harold Hill section withdrawn. Diverted between Stratford & Gants Hill via Wanstead instead of Ilford. Route now runs from Trafalgar Square to Hainault. N86: New route from Stratford to Harold Hill, replacing this section of route N25. N8: Newbury Park section withdrawn. Full route now from Victoria to Woodford Wells. Not sure what this would mean for the N55. Either it stays at Whipps Cross or goes to Woodford Wells via the 20.
