Correct. My dad did it on more than one occasion when the 453 was diverted So they could have kept the 12 running through. I guess even back in 2004 switching the 12 to the 390 to NHG removed a route from Oxford street and as said before the 390 did provide some new links to TCR and Euston/Kings X. Artics could not safely do the left turn from Regent Street into Oxford Street although it may have been possible when the road was quiet, a driver on the 73 said they were told not to attempt it and go via Margaret Street and John Princes Street which was OK for a diversion route but not really practical for a regular service.

Apparently the Dulwich section was nearly lost as the residents objected to the bendys having to use a different road to stand. I don't remember them using a different road at Dulwich?

Maybe I'm mistaken and it stayed on the same road and it was that road that there were objections from the residents.

London bus routes mentions the possibility of the cutback to Peckham due to a reversal of the standing arrangements.

If it was unsafe to make the turn then my father, with around 20 years bus driving experience at that time, would not have done it. The problem with those buses was people with no experience of driving them telling drivers what they could and couldn’t do with them. My dad drove them every day for five years and knew exactly how manoeuvrable they were and exactly where they could and couldn’t go. He was even showing Go Ahead drivers how to drive them after Stagecoach lost the 453

Like I said, drivers were told by people with no experience of driving them what those buses could or couldn’t do and in many cases drivers just blindly accepted what they were told. On a number of occasions my dad proved driving instructors at Stagecoach wrong with regards the abilities of those buses and also proved people at CentreComm wrong as well

It would be OK now as the road layout has changed.

I spend my days driving little buses and even then there are a number of occasions where I need to take a bit of the other side of the road to make it round

I thought the same with the 12. I can't remember where they used to stand. In fairness the 12 was going to change anyways due to the overlapping sections thou i guess it could have become Dulwich to NHG through. The 12 had been NHG to Dulwich for c10 years before conversion to bendybus. They were straight through late evenings and Sunday. Before the bendies arrived, the 12 used to stand in Etherow Street with Route 40 opposite a primary school. This changed to two stands in Friern Road and Lordship Lane, which are residential. The Friern Road stand is the more controversial of the two.

Always thought the 115 would have been ideal - a nice long straight route but not sure about the East Ham terminus being suitable.

Tfl are a bit more persistent with getting bendys on routes compared with LTs. There were a few stand re modellings and even new garages like LV. With LTs if the route is not suitable it didn't get them.

Would the bendies have been able to make the left turn from Regent Street to Oxford Street on the 94? I thought this was the reason the 12 was originally curtailed. Would have been interesting seeing the bendies perform the u-turn on the 279 at Manor House, not sure the bus station at Waltham Cross would have accommodated them either That turn was tight with a 10.5m TA mainly watching the rear offside overhang. If the lane was straddled then there was no problem. I cant see any reason why a bendy couldn't make that turn, although it would be very tight if it didn't straddle lanes.

After it was mentioned that the 94 was considered for bendy bus operation with a garage in North Acton. We also know the 134 was considered. The 279 was also a candidate but not sure why it didn't go ahead. Does anybody know anymore routes that were considered? Whilst it was felt that the 29 was the last logical route were anymore after 2006 considered? The 253 was considered.
