Wouldn't it be simpler if the DfT take over and Mr Khan can get on with tackling knife crime etc? When the GLA was introduced it was agreed TfL was part of the mayor's jurisdiction, changing that without a public vote would be undemocratic. The people in London voted for Labour control so they get Labour control. The knife crime issue is more so the fault of the Home Office rather than Khan. What's Khan meant to do if the Home Office don't give him the resources? So if Khan takes no responsibility for anything and everything is Central Governments fault, what is the point of a London Mayor, other an extra cost to the tax payer. He needs to start answering questions, and stop asking them. That is what his role should be.

Why should Khan take responsibility for something that is actually controlled by Central government though? The mayor has the responsibility of then spreading out the funds and using the funds, however if the funds aren't there all he can do is blame the government until the funds become available. Again, is he meant to just magic money out of thin air?

The pandemic has wrecked the world's economy, can't keep racking up debt for future generations.

He needs to trim costs or boost revenue ... but seemingly he has no responsibility.

I think Khan knows he's being watched like a hawk, especially by tired Londoners who saw the cost of Red Route fines go up to £160 this week - it's obvious that TfL is "Spursy" when it comes to spending and it all seems to drain through Sadiq's fingers. This ad seen on a bus shelter in central London Thankfully the Government is too busy trying to clear up the mess from the Lockdown Parties, that no one will pay attention to TfL's woes - they are like that broke sibling who goes from one crisis to another, waiting for another handout from mum and dad if the car breaks down, phone bill to pay or some other 'catastrophe'... He is still forging ahead with bus electrification, though I'm sure it's expensive (though utility firms are having issues if garages need to be connected to the grid if not in an industrial area which uses a lot of energy)... hence diesel buses on the 235, probably whilst electrics wait for charging to be done. There seems to be an issue of finding homes for LT's (hence unusual conversions, 259 joins the 349 and 313 as surprise candidates, along with the 111), and a lot of the LT's are looking as tired as Antonio Conte in his 3rd month at Spurs. Where will the money come from for refurbs of the LT's? Crossrail may not open to much fanfare if most of it's intended passengers are still working from home due to confusing messages over Covid from the Government

Amount of times we have seen it scheduled and never started is amassing. The 8 prototypes will not be withdrawn before 2026, and the rest starting from 2027 at the earliest ... their value being depreciated over 14 yesrs

He is trying to resolve those issues, but he can't do it all on his own and the Government needs to play its part by providing adequate funding, as it does with every other local authority and devolved administration in the UK. Khan also has a lobbying, spokesperson and advocacy role, as the elected leader of London. Wouldn't it be simpler if the DfT take over and Mr Khan can get on with tackling knife crime etc? Laughable that people continually suggest this basket case of a government could do a better job. If the DfT took over, kiss goodbye to a decent public transport network in London full stop

If the DfT took over, kiss goodbye to a decent public transport network in London full stop Traditions will end, London red will gradually get replaced by regional liveries as TfL is watered down and loses it's strength is the worse case scenario. From a financial perspective, a customer who requires a loan every 4 months isn't a great one, and soon it's time for a sit down with the personal advisor to discuss your borrowing before your account gets sold to a debt management outfit The way things are being run, even the curious case of removing LTs, long standing routes axed, falling passenger numbers (meanwhile TfL move to swanky new digs in Stratford having tired of their previous 21 year old building ) while His Lordship rides around in a Range Rover with police protection as he doesn't trust the transport system he runs... the desperate search for money as you try extract it from those who do not travel in to London for fun (Red route charges, ULEZ, Congestion Charge to name a few) shows that things need to change. TfL is the Tottenham Hotspur of PTE's when you compare it to Greater Manchester, or anywhere else. They have to realise Londoners' love of the bus has ended, due to their speed restrictions, road works, rising costs and falling standards, no creature comforts on board, crap blinds which do not tell you enough information, or in some cases no blinds at all (see 318) It's a shame to see it end like this but TfL has to be managed better. It's a shame the Government is in it's own mess (new Lockdown party held just before funeral of Prince Philip is the latest news) Boris is in hiding isolating as it is feared his dog has Covid (he's conveniently hiding again to avoid scrutiny) it is a shame that Bojo started this cut to TfL's budget as he ended his term as mayor (conveniently after the LT project finished), but no other local government department has had so many bailouts, so something needs to happen

Meanwhile in the real world out of all the routes TfL could cut they pick on the 15 and 170 and extend the 168 contract even though they're proposing to withdraw it. Could the DfT possibly do any worse? They've done ok with Southeastern despite being called the operator of last resort😳.

The 168 contract probably has a early termination clause like others has suggested. Are you suggesting routes should be cut without consultation?

As a Tottenham (garage) fan, I am used to disappointments each January... but this may be the worst yet as TfL's march to Bankruptcy continues

The LT another expensive BOJO vanity project, which like everything King BOJO touches turns to mould.
It's only raison d'etre was the rear door and staircase.Close those and the LT project was pointless. No doubt LT1 and LT1000 will become London Bus Museum exhibits and Sri Lanka may be interested in others.

LTs are likely to continue in service until they are no longer economically viable, much the same as any other type of bus. In the meantime I suspect most Londoners are far more concerned about knife crime than they are about LTs.
