He can be impeached before leaving office and then placed before the senate after leaving office, I believe he would become the first president to do so after leaving office. Whilst the senate does require a super majority to convict him which it could get if republicans turn on him, something which looks increasingly likely everyday, the senate can also bar him from running as president again with a normal majority which if achieved in the next few days could also be likely. The latter has only been exercised by a sitting senate three times so only requires a normal majority. As the senate is not likely to meet before January 19th one would assume unless they convene a special session that the trial will be held after the inauguration. If convicted Trump would lose his pension and benefits but would retain his secret service detail. It will be interesting to see how a Senate trial would take place. Mitch McConnell and Trump seem to be on quite poor terms now and McConnell has said the offences Trump committed should require an impeachment, although it looks like he will do this after Trump leaves office, would probably be a mess to remove him while in office through an emergency sitting of the Senate. It might also be in the best interests of McConnell and the rest of the Republicans to ban Trump from running for future office, the sequence of events over the past week shows just how much of a liability he actually is and what a bad reputation he can bring them. If not barred there's a very high chance of him running again in 2024, and with Biden potentially not running again who knows who will be running for the Dems, Trump's cult like following would certainly propel him through the Republican Primaries in 2024 should he run again and once again he will be just as much as a liability, whether he makes it into office or not. Barring him from future office gives the Republicans a decent attempt at seizing the White House back next election, and maybe keeping it afterwards should they put forward a decent candidate. I'll think he'll be even worse next time around as by then, QAnon would of grown larger and might be in a position by then to really pedal their incredibly stupid views through the president. The cult like following would have evolved into an altogether terrifying monster - fancy believing Trump is the saviour of America fighting to break up a Satan worshiping cannibal pedophile ring that is plotting against the US

I just learnt that the super majority is only based on senators who turn up on the trial day to vote. So if none of the republicans attend or very few do as a number of media outlets in the US are reporting conviction and barring could happen. It will be interesting in 2024 as I don’t think Biden will last another term, so it could be a clean slate for both parties with both holding primaries in the 2023/2024 period.

If this is the case, I could very well see many Republican Senators not turning up, so they effectively can't be blamed for voting with Democrats but then won't have the trouble of being accused by people for supporting Trump's erratic behaviour. The frontrunner seems to be Kamala Harris for 2024, however considering she hasn't even taken office yet it's a long shot to even predict she'll win the primaries or even run. Plus there's also been many times where a Vice President failed to win the Presidency, we had Nixon fail to take it against Kennedy, then Mondale got whitewashed against Reagan and we had the famous Bush vs Gore election. Therefore as you say it will be a clean slate for both of them and the last thing Republicans will want is Trump turning it into another referendum on his policies as opposed to a Presidential election. Should I live int he US, I'd probably be a Democrat supporter, however it's clear that 2020 was a referendum on Trump as opposed to a win for Biden.

Al Gore technically won his election if like 99% of nations it was based on the popular vote, same as Hilary Clinton.

She seems to have a vendetta against the so called Trump brigade, but can only see this backfiring and throwing fuel onto the fire. Trump knew what he was doing and inciting these clowns to go and effectively trash the capital. But trying to remove him from office with barely a week left in power is pointless, no matter what statement they are trying to make. I agree he should be impeached though. In the US the far right and far left are getting worst and more extreme, if it goes on at this rate we would probably see some kind of civil war. I would also lay the blame on the social media companies that have thrived out of this Trump mania over the years. Hopefully the republicans would never field a clown like Trump again or any other party.

Pretty sure he has to be impeached whilst in office? And need 70% Impeachment complete. Senate trial can (and will) take place after he has left office. Unprecedented times we’re living in. There are plenty of lawmakers claiming that would break the constitution if that was the case, and could be thrown out by a court before the trial begins. Unprecedented as you say.

Finally Inauguration Day and it couldn't have come sooner. Hopefully this is the end of the Banana Republic and relatively normal diplomatic relationships throughout the world.
Looking like Biden will restore WHO funding and will rejoin the Paris Climate Agreement today as well.
