There is a part of me that wishes the 390 number was changed to 10, as what happened with the 13 and 82. The 390 I can see being organised out of existence in the current climate, a la 168/271/C2, but that is a different topic altogether! Same. Now the 73 isn't as frequent I can so easily see it returned to Victoria

What no 369 or 387 in the poll? I think the reason the poll was kept to numbers below 300 as these are traditional rather than recent route numbers.

What no 369 or 387 in the poll? No. This was deliberately kept to what I describe in the first post as 'traditional LT Central Area route numbers', which are 1 to 299.

This got more engagement than I expected! Thanks to all who voted and commented, an interesting and clear result with the 10 coming out on top. I can see the logic in that.
For my part, I initially went for 82 before a late change to 239. My reasoning is that it feels like a number that could be slotted in anywhere and has been vacant for a while now. If there are changes brewing around Tottenham, it would fit well with the 149/243/259/279/349 group.

Arriva would also operate that route, meaning that the only 2 routes beginning with a 2 and ending in a 9 that Arrriva wouldn't operate would be 219 and 299. How weird is it to think of it that way!

In reality unless there is a major restructure that creates situations like the proposed 11/311, potentially none of these numbers could end up being used again really.

Yes it would be. Mind you, for their next tender Arriva could win these routes and run them from TH and AD respectively.

What - none of those numbers ever used again? I can’t believe that. Even in the biggest slimming down of services in recent memory - the post-Fares Fair cuts of September 1982 - we saw different route numbers introduced: for example, the 60, 208 and 261 to replace parts of the 94 and 130. So their time will come again - eventually!

Back to topic, thinking more about the next number to be re-used, then for me it would very much depend on where the route will go, as you might want to use a route number in a particular area.
