Thankfully Darren Rodwell has reportedly been deselected by the NEC but it never should have gotten to the point where he was allowed to stand at all. Regardless of whether someone threatened him it’s no excuse for breaking GDRP rules, he should be fined or given a suspended sentence for breaking the law. I was going go to say at least we're seeing some consistency from Labour bigwigs but if he'd been from the left of the Labour party I'm sure he would've been hung out to dry far faster and more ruthlessly so I'm not sure if "consistency" is the right word. The latest is that he's having a disciplinary so more mixed messages from Labour. Apparently the NEC haven't approved his candidacy and today was the rubber stamping so perhaps this meeting will be little more than a confirmation exercise. I wouldn't fancy being tried by a kangaroo court... Likely influenced by outgoing MP Margaret Hodge. I imagine he effectively was a crowned successor to her because of her Blairite values that people in B&D tend to resonate with more than someone who is further left. That however doesn't defend his actions and it could open up a very safe seat should someone else be given the opportunity to stand.

I can understand that. You don't necessarily want a relic from the Corbyn era still around. Yet Dodds, Rayner, Eagle, Bryant, Powell etc all have hung on from the Corbyn era shadow cabinet with prominent roles in the Starmer frontbench. Rayner is barely a Corbyn ally anymore, she played a part in his dropping and eventual expulsion from the party and now sits quite firmly on the right of it. Her popularity is soaring and I'd not be surprised to see her eventually in the Home Secretary position. All the others are effectively in powerless positions. Starmer is clearly playing the long game, initially starting with a relatively left biased cabinet before purging everyone bit by bit. I remember when Dodds was shadow Chancellor, while initially an absurd choice it did allow for the purging of the left to be done in a staged and relatively harmless manner.
