It was very sad to walk past the branch in the Oaks centre in Acton and see the clearance sale. The high street is really in dire straits. I am a very old school and do nearly all my shopping in actual shops. I can't believe how companies like Uber Eats and Deliveroo are taking over everything! No matter what shop you go in be in Iceland, Sainsbury or Boots all you hear is the chimes from the ordering system telling staff another order has arrived. I find is very frustrating when the bike drivers come into stores and try to jump the line as they want to get he orders and delivery as quickly as possible.
They say there is no money around but people are happy to sit and home and order sausage rolls from Greggs at overinflated prices and pay a service charge on top of that.
Not only that but at places like Lidl they're replacing tills with self service ones. Ridiculous!

Not only that but at places like Lidl they're replacing tills with self service ones. Ridiculous! Sorry might be missing something here but what's the problem with that? Self service machines require less people to manage so it gives companies an opportunity to get rid of staff to save money but the drawback is self service machines generally are very unreliable so could cut into costs they saved whereas a till is a far more reliable piece of kit and many customers still do value the face to face interaction they give. I use self service tills but I can fully understand the complaints people have with them. We’ve recently removed the majority of tills at our branch for an extended self service area and it’s been universally disliked by staff & customers alike and has led to even more arguments than usual.

As for Wilko, the last time I went in there they didn't have some of the things I wanted so I went elsewhere. A problem Wilko have is that most of their shops are in town centre locations whilst there competitors are often on retail parks with lower overheads and free parking.

Supermarkets are a nightmare now with long queues and usually one or two machines tills not working. Then there is the issue of hardly any self service tills that take cash! And when there is a cash one you can guarantee someone will be one of them awkward customers who are slow then pack at a snails pace and pay by card whilst you are left waiting. I think they should have dedicated cash only tills! We haven’t gone totally cashless yet. Even clothes retailers are starting to go self service.

Well in my lidl there's 4 tills (excluding self service) however they are never open. A waste of space

Loss of jobs is one thing I agree however it also allows staff to stock the shelves. I went into Sainsbury’s today and a lot of shelves were empty. Overall before self service tills I used to not bother to shop if I see a long queue. I much prefer to do shopping during the week and before 10am, too many people on Saturday & Sunday clogging up the shops.

Loss of jobs is one thing It seems counter productive to keep antiquated techniques just so that jobs can be retained. I know in a lot of supermarkets they just pause recruitment and redeploy staff as opposed to handing out mass redundancies when a few self service tills are introduced. My local Asda is now mostly self service, with only around 3 tills remaining. Queues move so much faster and apps like scan and go help even more where people can scan items as and when they pick them up. At most I only spend a minute at a till when using scan and go, even with massive hauls.

Even in my office we’ve gone from 6 CSAs to just 3 with no loss of workload.

Sainsburys, Tesco etc have had them for some years now. I appreciate that some people prefer human interaction but it's the same as bus conductors, petrol pump attendants etc, they're just not needed anymore.

It’s only recently supermarkets has pretty much closed all tills. Self service tills have been around for 20 or so years but you can’t have failed to notify the sudden increase in new self tills being installed recently. You also can’t have missed the increase in queues.
