Supermarkets are a nightmare now with long queues and usually one or two machines tills not working. Then there is the issue of hardly any self service tills that take cash! And when there is a cash one you can guarantee someone will be one of them awkward customers who are slow then pack at a snails pace and pay by card whilst you are left waiting. I think they should have dedicated cash only tills! We haven’t gone totally cashless yet. Even clothes retailers are starting to go self service. To be honest I'd rather all machines take both card and cash. Having card only tills slows things down because some people don't have cards

But sadly this won’t happen as card only makes it easier for the supermarkets and means less cash to handle. On a related note why do self service till give out such awful change which is nearly always 5p’s.

Aren't lidl quite new to self service checkouts? Sainsburys, Tesco etc have had them for some years now. I appreciate that some people prefer human interaction but it's the same as bus conductors, petrol pump attendants etc, they're just not needed anymore. Sorry but those comparisons are not the same! It’s only recently supermarkets has pretty much closed all tills. Self service tills have been around for 20 or so years but you can’t have failed to notify the sudden increase in new self tills being installed recently. You also can’t have missed the increase in queues. Increase in queues? I've noticed the complete opposite, that's the whole point of self service checkouts.

You shouldn’t be penalised for paying cash which you are at the moment. You either have to wait for one or two self service tills or face a long queue. Even the customer service tills get hammered now as there are so few staffed tills.

Well I suggest visiting a supermarket on a weekend afternoon to see what I am talking. I experience this at Asda, Tesco and Sainsburys at Beckton. Tesco by far is the worse where you can’t easily get around the aisles because of customers waiting for the staffed tills.

Whether people like it or not cash is on the way out. I can understand concerns about a cashless society but inevitably that's where we're heading. Would anybody seriously suggest that TfL start taking cash on buses again?

In my Tesco they can't even be bothered to open a checkout.

All three in Beckton have improved drastically since their self checkouts were introduced. I've got family who work in the Tesco and friends in Sainsburys and both have mentioned that the self service checkouts have improved waiting times.

Wonder if till-less shops could be good like my local AmazonFresh in Hounslow (never been in there though).

Wonder if till-less shops could be good like my local AmazonFresh in Hounslow (never been in there though). Three of the stores have closed recently. Sainsburys had a till-less store in Holborn which reverted to a normal store as they felt customers weren’t ready for this stop of store.

I waited hours for one this one time and by that point I’ve completely forgotten what the shelf price was.

Have to agree to disagree then as I had long wait today.
