Both the schools you mention have selective entry, so it is entirely a choice for parents to have their children sit and take the exams. I don’t think TfL would be under any obligation to provide a service to a school in Dartford but it may do so as part of an arrangement with KCC and the school themselves. Most of the kids going to these schools would no doubt be ineligible for council arranged free travel. TfL does run the double deck 96 route past the school. Past Dartford Boys and close enough to Dartford Girls, but as I’m sure you are aware, cl54, not Wilmington. I will not go through it in any detail, but TfL have an obligation to Londoners and London based people to provide travel, and on occasion that means travel outside the area. This certainly applies to the 601, and I think the 492 as well except for the Dartford to Bluewater bit. With regret, southlondon413, you seem to have very little idea how the education system works either in Kent or in Bexley.

Yes but the point is it is entirely a choice to send have a child sit an exam and then send them to that school. They could just as easily go to the local comprehensive rather than a school that is further away by bus or car. Regardless of whether these schools are better it is still a choice to send your child there and as a parent you have the responsibility to make sure they can get there and back safely. It isn’t down to TfL to provide a school bus when the schools in question are selective entry and beyond TfL. They are lucky they still get the 96 stopping there. As for free council travel I suggest you read up on the rules related to this as poor or not as the parents choose to send their children to the grammar schools every child would be instantly ineligible for a school to home taxi or mini-bus arranged pickup. They would get TfL passes but not direct door to door travel. Harsh opinions there. The only opinion is that TfL shouldn’t have to provide a school bus, the rest is fact. Suggest you read the below as most, if not all, the kids attending would be excluded from free travel provided by the council as I doubt a a selective grammar school would be deemed as their nearest suitable school. www.gov.uk/free-school-transport

Regardless of the Kent bit, TfL are keen to be seen cutting emissions in the GLC area, and a bus service is one way to do so. Whether it's effective at so doing is another matter...

Wilmington is in Kent and therefore pupil transport is down to the county council to provide. There were students from both schools on board the 96 I travelled on last week. They benefit from TfL running the route to/from Bluewater and all were on the bus into Greater London.

My kids went to a couple of schools down there and i paid for their passes. But thanks for the link.

If anyone saw my post that was here before I replaced it with this one - I posted in haste and apologies to anyone I may have upset.
You’re all wondering what I said now 😂

Do children 16 and under get free travel on the TFL network? If so can this be used on buses that run outside London such as the 96 & 492?

I know the Surrey ones off by heart but can’t remember the Kentish ones - I have a feeling the 601 wasn’t on the Kent list, but both the 428 and the 492 were.

The proposal to cut the 428 and 492 was possibly an indication of the changes to the funding agreement. Similar to how TFL proposed changes to the 166/216/465.

So you can get free travel up to the age of 18 on TFL services now?

So you can get free travel up to the age of 18 on TFL services now? Yes. In fact until your are 18 years and 364 days old. Hence why school routes potentially don't take any revenue at all and why I think TFL should now look at some of the routes where surrounding routes have improved. Take the 613. Was created when the 80 was every 12 mins with SDs, the 151 was every 20 mins to Worcester Park with SDs and the 726 a non starter. Now the 80 is every 8 with DDs, the 151 every 10 and SL7 every 15 mins all with DDs and it doesn't cost kids to have to change buses in Sutton like in the past. Same with the 627 and the previous 4 SDs an hour on the 127 and 407. Both are now DD every 10 and 12 mins respectively.

So you can get free travel up to the age of 18 on TFL services now? Those over 11 need a ZIP card for free travel. Believe 16-18 card is only free to use for London residents. Sure I will be corrected if wrong.
