Maybe if the Mayor and the government were not playing childish political games, then maybe they may serve the people that elect them, rather than dancing to the rhythm of their master. I would hope an independent plays no political games and has a worthwhile relationship with any government ... who would not want to seem to be undemocratic. You are the Mayor of the Capital city ... you should not be playing national party politics in that role. But I am doubtful whether an independent wouldn't play party politics. Most people do align with a political party on the spectrum, whether you support them is another matter though and chances are that you'd probably play ball a bit more with the party that aligns with your views and the ruling/opposition parties would behave accordingly. It's looking like a Labour government will be in place by the end of the year. If an independent mayor wants to introduce a right wing policy then chances are that a Labour government would give them grief attempting to implement it, the opposition party may have some level of support for the candidate but will probably not endorse any policies directly as they ran their own candidate who was unsuccessful. By which point you'd be in a better position if you voted for Susan Hall as she'd at least have the support of the opposition to get her policies through. I am no fan of Hall at all, but I think that if you are intent on the city having a mayor who can implement policies then you really should be sticking with the major parties who have the finances and support available to the mayor. Whilst pumping money into London may have benefited Labour years ago I don’t think it will play well today. It’s not a good look if Starmer wins Downing Street and Labour win the government then start pumping millions into London. I don’t see it happening not when there is so little money to go around. I could see a change to the way London is funded. Perhaps an increase in the BRR, which everyone so easily forgets replaced the TfL operators grant, to City Hall or a very small transport grant but I think any Labour government would seek to secure futures in any areas they gain, particularly in the north. I would prefer them to look towards cities like Manchester, Birmingham and Liverpool with the view to developing them into true second cities. Labour just need to be innovative to ensure that London is not defunded but not overfunded either. Perhaps a portion of house sales tax could go to city hall to fund new housing projects or perhaps an empty land tax for land owners to city hall.

Oh for sure, I think there'll be a lot of emphasis at this GE about how the rest of the UK can get levelled up after the empty promises of the last government. But having a mayor who can persuade governments should result in things like the funding fiasco of last time being less of an issue. Khan did eventually get a deal, and even dropped some of the terms initially imposed such as the withdrawal of child travel and I'm sure an independent wouldn't have been treated that favourably. It's important that the North gets developed properly, the issue is that it's not something that can get done in one term but it's certainly something that needs a proper kick off during a first term. This could potentially include Canary Wharf style or even Middle Eastern style redevelopment of an area to attract people there. Currently it's a catch 22 as many graduates either move to other countries or move to London which means that the places they initially leave to not get the development opportunities that they need.

Can anyone explain why they would vote for Khan? I genuinely cannot think of a single thing in his favour. Would anyone with a Labour label get votes, regardless of their history?

Because it's effectively two party politics again, and why would anyone vote for the Conservatives? so Labour is where you go.

So, nothing in his favour except his label?

So, nothing in his favour except his label? Also - I do not want Susan Hall anywhere near the mayoralty. If the Conservatives had picked anyone with any degree of gravitas and caring, they’d have probably got my vote. They didn’t, so they won’t. Khan is the best way to keep her out.

Oh yes they are far better, solely by not being the Conservatives who don't know what they're doing and do nothing to help the struggling in the community.

So basically you just want a repeat of the 97-10 era where everyone was given every possible handout under the sun despite the fact that it has fostered in this entitled attitude so that so many who grew up in that era now have? Even though the current Labour have made it clear they don’t intend to increase benefits and have indicated they won’t really change much from the current governments distribution models?

Oh, Labour will be better, at least initially. The grotesque sense of entitlement the Conservatives will have if they somehow beat the odds in the general election will not be pretty for the country. But as with all governments, even the (presumed ) next Labour one will eventually run out of gas in some way, shape or form. No-one knows how, or when, but happen it will. I can’t understand anyone who will just vote for a specific party because that’s what they’ve always done.

Labour politicians are exactly the same as Conservative politicians, all are self centred w⚓s. Very few party aligned politians care about the man in the street, they are just in it for themselves. Not really saying either lot is exceptionally better or worse than the other ... both inept. It will be interesting to see how Labour do, as when they traditionally come to power the economy is normally in a pretty good shape, which they ruin and hand over to the conservatives. This time they will take over with the economy royally screwed. There is no wiggle room at the moment form either party, so not sure what you are expecting from a new government, it will be much of the same. It will remain that way until the issue that is the NHS is sorted. It can't continue to keep hemorrhaging cash at the rate it does, slowly increasing the percentage of GDP. How they do that, thankfully I am not a politician to decide, but we need a government that is not frightened to tackle the issue, as the longer we leave it, the deeper the more hole the country finds itself in. Unfortunately can't see either party having the balls to face up to this problem, as for some reason the public seem to think we should just keep shoveling money into the cash cow in an uncontrolled manner.

I can’t understand anyone who will just vote for a specific party because that’s what they’ve always done. I give it a year before Starmer is out as leader and we are left with the frankly abhorrent Angela Rayner, who will do more harm to the middle earner than any government ever has. Everyone seems to forget the middle earner is underrated and under appreciated but wields far more power than they want to admit but is consistently ignored by governments who only ever focus on the poor or the rich. The middle earner, from £30k to 100k are often forced to pay for policies that support the poor and the rich without any policies designed to assist them. I vote Tory as the values align more my own beliefs but even then I sit far more centrist than the majority of conservatives. I believe that people should be able to get assistance from a government when times are tough, through tax breaks or housing or benefits, but they shouldn’t become a lifestyle. I believe everyone who can work should and those who cannot do traditional, like those with physical or mental disabilities, but want to should be enabled to do so either with office jobs or something. I will vote Tory as I don’t trust in Labour to deliver the sunshine and rainbows they keep promising. I don’t believe in the Green Party as they are just a joke and the Lib Dems are still severely damaged from past history. The country probably will go Labour and it’s fine with me because I have said many times that we are ready for a change but I don’t believe Labour is the answer and I don’t believe Starmer is the saviour the media keep trying to make him out to be. There is just something off about him and it isn’t his nasally whiny voice, it’s his whole demeanour. We need reform in our government system to make it a lot fairer and a lot more representative of society. I have suggested the German style system would be perfect for us and solve the long standing issue of the Lords.
