I’d say the 242 in a way ever since it got curtailed to Aldgate from Tottenham Court Road and is no longer a 24 hour route. Don’t see why and N242 had to exist I doubt anyone living in Clapton Park Estate would class the 242 as 'useless'. The 242 provides links to local shopping and nightlife in Hackney, London Overground connections at Hackney Central and Dalston Junction, and a link to The City. It also provides round-the-corner links across Dalston, and is the only bus route along Commercial Street between Shoreditch and Aldgate. It also supports the 38, 149, 243 and 277. Not to mention the links to Homerton Hospital. N242 was retained to Tottenham Court Road to provide a direct link to and from West End nightlife. The 242 would just parallel the 8 if it went back to Tottenham Court Road so I see no point in sending it there. I do think there is merit in sending the 242 to London Bridge though when the 48 was withdrawn, as this would have retained the London Bridge-Hackney link which I imagine was well used by users of the 48. This would mean the 388 being cut back to Liverpool St. I think something like the 100 would be sensible to cover the Commercial St corriodor, with the 115 extended to St Paul’s.

Rather like the 53 to Elephant, I surprised it hasnt/if it didn't happen that the 25 eventually gets pulled back to Aldgate. Probably only lack of stand space and the need to run atleast one route along Cornhill has kept it.

He probably means it's a shell of what it once was, Hackney already has 254 connecting to Aldgate so sending the 242 there seems like a decision without much thought. The 67 was a better candidate.

I see merit in extending the 242 further to possibly Vauxhall via E&C and Kennington Lane. It would make a good connection to Hackney and the E&C to Liverpool Street corridors are pretty busy so I can see it getting used.

I think the only reason was to maintain link from South of Dalston Junction to Hommerton Hospital whereas the 149/243 still link Shoreditch with Stoke Newington/Stamford Hill.

The 388 doesn’t link the centre of Hackney to London Bridge is the problem, while the 48 did & so would the revised 242. Having the 242 parallel the 149 also isn’t the worst idea, because that route is always full up to the point where the drivers can’t allow anymore people on. TfL believes that people can use any one of the London Bridge-Shoreditch routes to change for a 55, which is also often packed out.

Passengers from centre of Hackney can change buses if needed. A lot of route change ideas go against the whole point of the hopper fare which was introduced to allow onward journeys with no additional cost.

I always thought when they were thinking of making the 135 and 242 one route they should of extended the D6 to Clapton Park & Homerton and re extended the 67 back to Aldgate and left 135 as is , 242 is a shadow of it's former self now in my opinion , 25 to Thameslink works in the week but also is the middle of nowhere should be extended to Holborn at least

Kennington Lane would be overbussed as the 196 is plenty along there, as long as people are ok with that, than it’s certainly doable

Yes I agree you can’t link everywhere directly but tfl did break a very well used link by withdrawing the 48 & the 242 would be useful to restore that. I don’t think though I needed to extend the 100 to Dalston & 115 to St Paul’s, rerouting the 78 along Commerical Road would probably be sufficient to cover that section of the 242. The 42 parallels the 78 between Tower Bridge Road & Liverpool St so not many links would be broken there.

Don’t see why and N242 had to exist I agree, its wasteman route The biggest laugh for me was when the 242N spent two years at St Paul's because TfL deemed there was enough capacity. If that was the case in the age of Night Tube, then why make the N242 just to extend it over the City to TCR? The appeal of using a 24 hour route is that you can make the same journey at 3pm that you can do at 3am. TfL ruined the 242 in the City by hacking it to St Paul's, and unfortunately for them I don't think the passenger demand they wanted has materialised. Tottenham Court Road coped fine with the N38, N55 and N253 for a Hackney link when the 242 was pulled out.

Unfortunately using 8s stand means it feels like it stops just short as opposed to if it ran all the way to Oxford Circus.
