I didn't realise the 315's are approaching 40 They're doing well. Hopefully the next franchisee will take better care of them than NXEA They are not 40, they were new about 1980-1981 which makes them 30 as they didn't enter service immediately. (They couldn't work on the 6.25kv section until the insulators were upgraded and clearances increased for voltage to be changed to 25kv) Can't remember the voltage change dates, but I think Liverpool St-Southend was 1500v dc until about 1959, then 6.25kv ac. The former dc sections needed larger insulators and was converted in phases from late 1970s, Liverpool St was converted about 1981 and Bethnal Green-Hackney about 3 years later. The last stock built with 6.25kv was some class 312 for working on GE (the Kings Cross batch didn't have voltage change equipment)

Coming past Ilford 'A Shop' this morning, I caught a glimpse of a South West Trains class 455 8 car set in the shed. I wonder what that is doing there...

Think they pass some of the units between the 'B' shed and 'A' shed. Noticed First CC had numerous 317's in there during their refurb programme too. In fact Ilford does alot of maintenance work for many London based TOC's AND the Royal Mail

Any old units knocking about that Abellio can refurbish for the Essex commuters ... imaging they are looking at trying to stick a pantograph on the 508s down at Eastleigh

I was right!!! ;D Predicted this a couple of months back when everyone said Abellio were going to sell their London bus ops. Looks like it wasn't a sell up but expansion!! I'm actually looking forward to this and see how they perform. Not heard much about them in the rail industry and how they perform, so that can only be a good thing!! No doubt a new attractive livery will be applied, though can't be much worse than the previous ONE incarnation!!! I'm more interested as to what changes, if any, they will make to the timetables concerning mainline stopping services at Romford. Either way it's another new dawn for this side of London. What I'm also interested in is after the Olympics. There are numerous rumours about DB and other European rail operators starting services from Stratford International. Could we see an Abellio service running from there to their native Holland with a joint ticket for East Anglia customers? It's a great business opportunity if they could do it!! Either way, looking forward to a new start......again

Evolution rather than revolution www.dft.gov.uk/news/pressrelease/dft-press-20111020/# The franchise, I believe, is literally just for the extension period that NatEx WOULD have got had they not defualted. They just want to make sure that there is a good enough service for the Olympics. I fully expect Abellio (putting lots of faith in them here) to perform well enough to gain a full-term frachise that will last up to the opening of CrossRail, which is probably another reason for a short term franchise agreement. Certainly a complex situation over here now with what's going on!!

That was a surprise Well done Abellio, as has been said, can't be worse than ONE or National Distress at present... Hopefully a proper colour scheme for the 315's interiors now ;D

Well done Abellio. I think I may have preferred a British operator, simply as it may be more helpful to the economy, but as long as Abellio can do a good job, I don't mind. They are experienced, with rail operations in Europe and some already in the UK.
So that means new signs and repainting of stations/trains...again. I'm sure many sign and paint companies benefit from the ever-changing franchises! Any livery will be better than the ONE livery or the current grey/white livery.
