Routes 60, 118 diversion route

Does anyone know the route the 60 and 118 will take while the railway bridge at Greyhound Lane is closed for six months from later this year?

A Network Rail spokesman said a section of Greyhound Lane would be closed from October 30 until the end of April next year so the platforms at Streatham Common station can be extended.

The closure will be between Eardley Road and Estreham Road, where Greyhound Lane crosses the railway lines.

The National Rail spokesman said it was developing a traffic management plan to minimise disruption caused by the work, which involves replacing half the bridge. "The road closure is unavoidable, but Network Rail will be providing a shuttle bus to link the two sides of the station, which will operate every 15 minutes throughout the work. "

Helen Smith, Neighbourhood Watch co-ordinator in Streatham South, said: “We understand the improvements made to the station are going to be of huge benefit to the community and particularly to commuters. We are keen to ensure that every option for reducing the chaos on the roads that will ensue from the closure of the bridge is considered by Network Rail.”

I can't see the 60 and 118 being diverted anywhere other than via Stanford Road and Norbury Station (rather than Greyhound Lane and Streatham Common Station). And the shuttle bus that NR said is to operate won't be of much use if it doesn't connect to Streatham High Road.

The shuttle service could connect by diverting via Eardly Road (also Westcote Road westbound) and Mitcham Lane to Streatham High Road, obviously having to be a single deck service due to the low bridge on Eardly Road.

What are the terminus points of the intended shuttle service? I'm assuming Streatham to Pollards Hill?

Around the mid 90's, greyhound lane was closed between eardley road and estreham road/ellison road due to bridge works which lasted for two weeks. The 60 and 118 diverted via ellison road, glenclairn road via the low bridge which is big enough for DDs and glenister park road. I thought I was going mad when I saw a bus going right past my house (when I lived there at the time) ;D

I would assume the shuttle bus would divert via the same roads as above if linking streatham high road and pollards hill. Imo a 15 mins service is poor for such a area

Glencairn Road bridge is 15' 3" so nowhere near being too low. I used to use that as a short cut when I did the staff bus from SW having dropped a driver off at Streatham Sainsbury's then having to head for Mitcham. In a VC.

Thanks Steve, interesting to know what they have done in the past. If they still use that route, then I do not see why there would be any need for a shuttle bus as no stops would be missed on the normal routes. And pedestrians could use the station footbridge, using the accessibility gate halfway down platform 4 if the Eardley Road exit will be closed. Keeping the barrier open would surely be cheaper than running buses, which does not seem ideal when there will be added traffic congestion.

I was originally thinking it would have to be something like PVL371 suggested, but I never realised how low the bridge on Eardley Road was, despite having gone through it so many times, or how easy the Glencairn Road option is. I would imagine northbound general traffic to be directed that way though.

A member of the Streatham Action local community group posted on Twitter that the diversion will be as binpod suggested, using Stanford Road between Rowan Road and London Road/Streatham High Road, so missing out Streatham Vale completely.

This would explain the need for a shuttle bus, presumably running between the new stand area by Streatham station and Pollards Hill via Glencairn Road?

'Steve80' suggested the route via Glencairn Road which can accomodate deckers as the bridge is high enough. Surely, this would cause less inconveniance to passengers of the 60 & 118?

Yes, that certainly sounds better for passengers, and is a pretty short diversion.

When Ambleside Avenue was being repaved the 315 towards Balham was diverted from St Leonard's to Garrad's Road via Mitcham Lane, Southcroft Road, Rectory Lane, Church Lane, and Tooting Bec Road, which was about half as long as the whole route just to avoid a third of a mile.

It seems strange that this time they would just remove the only bus services through a large residential area for six months, especially when a simple alternative route exists. I can only think it must be due to local residents as the bridge is certainly tall enough and the advertised road closure only states Greyhound Lane and not any side streets.

Network Rail are holding a public meeting next week (Thursday at 7pm at Granton School) so maybe it will all be explained then.

The shuttle bus will start from stop CR on Streatham Vale (the one after Homebase) and follow the normal 60 route in the direction of Pollard's Hill until the roundabout between Wide Way and South Lodge Avenue. There it will turn back on itself and follow the route back before terminating at a temporary stop outside 28 Streatham Vale, just short of usual stop CS. This allows the bus to use Aberfoyle Road, Carnforth Road, and Eardley Road to turn around and reenter service at stop CR.

The shuttle bus will be free and run every 15 minutes between 4:15am to 1:55am.

The signposted diversion between Streatham high Road and Streatham Vale for traffic will be via Mitcham Lane and Eardley Road. Have not seen any mention of an alternative for tall vehicles though, given the low railway bridge on that route. An accessible temporary footbridge will maintain pedestrian access between Greyhound Lane and Streatham Vale during the bridge closure.

The closure is planned from 3 November until 29 April.

So not only will residents in Streatham Vale lose a direct connection to the High Road and local town centre, they also lose their 24 hour bus service.

Those 255 drivers will have it even easier than they do already, the 60/118's combined diversion covering their entire route.

I wonder whether the 255 could've been diverted to Streatham Common Station (covering shuttle route 560) and the 60/118 cover the Stanford Way-Streatham Hill bit. My guess is that the 255 will be very underused during the diversion

According to LOTS, the new route 560 will be operated by Quality Line, has a PVR of 2 and the vehicles used on the route will be Darts.
