There is no such thing as a pointless or useless route anywhere. Whether the 470 can survive in its current form is an entirely different argument altogether. I feel like redundant is a better word to describe some routes. Specifically for routes that don’t do anything that another route doesn’t already do. Like DT 11 said I wouldn’t say the 45 is redundant in its current form but routes that do feel redundant are the 209 (in its current form), 357 & 414. The 357 is not redundant. We have been through all this before.

Or maybe a properly “useless” route is one that could be withdrawn without the need for replacement. In that case there aren’t really any, even ones like the 45 and 414 need other routes to be changed to cater to their withdrawals. I think you could get away with removing the 209 without replacement. It’s not helped by the fact that they often leave Mortlake Bus Station immediately after a 378 leaves. To be honest the 209 should have been extended to Richmond via Sheen Lane and Upper Richmond Road. Would have given Mortlake Station a direct service and Sheen Lane a proper stopping service. If there was no space in Richmond then perhaps Ham following the 65 or Twickenham via Twickenham Road and St Margarets Station. Create some new cross borough links.

I think it would be best to just merge the 209 with the 533. So via Castelnau and Church Road in both directions, double run to Avondale Road (if needed) then over Chiswick Bridge to Hammersmith. At the 533's current frequency. Is the 378 particularly well used either? Maybe it could be replaced by a higher frequency 485, adding a double run to Putney Bridge if required. From Mortlake there would still be the 209 to Barnes (Church Road), or a short walk to Upper Richmond Road for the 337 (also linking to the District Line at East Putney). As it will still be a long time until the bridge eventually reopens, there must be some savings to be made by simplifying the network here.

I agree with your term of redundant being a better use of word though I wouldn't agree it's fits the 209 but that's just my view on that particular route.

Instead of using a large chunk of Upper Richmond Road, I'd have it continue along Sheen Lane then use Christchurch Road and Sheen Common Drive before turning back into Upper Richmond Road. From Richmond, it could follow the 490 along the Richmond to Twickenham corridor and then turn down Meadway and loop around the estate the 969 serves (Meadway > Lincoln Avenue > Selkirk Road > Gloucester Road > Devon Avenue > Meadway (new stand installed) > Lincoln Avenue > same loop repeated and then back to Hammersmith Bridge). This could either run at 2bph or 3bph. This would serve a lot of new roads (and some only served by the 969) which are currently more than 400m away from the bus network.

Route 163 is pretty useless, at least between Wimbledon and Raynes Park, duplicated by routes 152 & 164.
The section between Morden and Raynes Park could be covered by a return of route 157 or another route extension such as route 201.

It really isn’t, it serves a purpose as a short but busy feeder route between stations and busy, mostly, residential areas. I don’t think the 157 or 201 would be particularly good replacements. The 152 doesn’t even go to Wimbledon and is the lightest used of the three on the common section. A definite no from me.

There is no such thing as a useless route and even if there was, the 163 is nowhere such a description. On top of that, and echoing what southlondon413 already said, the 157 & 201 are the last routes to receive an extension, especially given the latter has not always been the most reliable route in it's current form since it's extension to Morden.

389 Barnet Spires to Underhill and rarely runs, the 326 already covers this section and runs way more frequently. Would love the see the 389 be more useful and replace the 326 around the Underhill and Dollis Valley sections then terminate at East Barnet Village as to continue links from Dollis Valley to East Barnet.
