Warning these are only fantasy changes
53 - withdrawn, replaced by 54 and 453 453 - extended to Blackheath Royal Standard but cut back to Oxford Circus. To replace the 53 and also to link Blackheath to the west end. 54 - withdrawn between Woolwich and Blackheath Village. Rerouted to North Greenwich via Sun in the sands and Blackwall Tunnel Southern Approach. To link Catford and Elmer's End to North Greenwich 454 - new route operating between Plumstead station and Brockley Rise via 53 to New Cross, double run at the Sainsburys then 172 to Brockley Rise. To replace the 53 and to support the 453. Also to give Brockley a link to Deptford 172 - slight frequency reduction due to the introduction of the 454 12 - extended to Marylebone. To replace the 453. Also retained to keep links between Oxford Circus and Camberwell/Peckham/Dulwich 148 - rerouted between Lambeth North and Camberwell via Oval. To link Camberwell New Road with Waterloo and Westminster and to link Kennington Road with Camberwell. Also because Walworth Road has too many buses.

From the off I do not know why there is any need to fully withdraw the 53. It is one of the top 3 busiest bus routes in South London so just from that there is absolutely no need to meddle with it.
Also from when I have used the 53, and judging by comments on here, there are plenty of long distance journeys done on the 53. To me it just makes no sense to cut it.

Also totally against withdrawing the 53 its a vital trunk route for commuters in South East London and key links from Charlton to Deptford, New Cross, OKR and Elephant would be butchered remember SE London doesn't have the best rail links so the 53 is incredibly important. I've suggested cutting the 148 back to Elephant as an alternative to withdrawing the 12 as the links to the West End are far more important to Camberwell and Peckham than links to Bayswater and Notting Hill.

Could be argued however that Walworth then lose their Victoria and Marble Arch links, and its not uncommon to see well loaded 148s coming up the Walworth Road.
Perhaps instead of the 148 replacing the 12, perhaps it could instead replace the 40. It's no real secret that the Clerkenwell section isn't really well used so perhaps an extension of the 148 to Dulwich Library through East Dulwich instead might be a slightly better idea, and then have the 40 done away with.

I realise it ‘only’ a fantasy change but the 53 simply cannot be withdrawn. My father has driven the route since 1995 (apart from a 5 year stint on the 453) and he says it’s more popular than ever with buses often filling up along Griffin Road early in the morning and people travelling all the way into London. The idea of withdrawing it is simply preposterous

I get this is a fantasy but the 53 is far too valuable to be axed, it serves several areas which aren’t near a train station, it’s one of the busiest routes in London, and a major trunk route for SE London, people get on at Plumstead or Woolwich and generally ride the route all the way to Elephant & Castle or Lambeth

There's a reason why it's in this thread and not the other. I don't think withdrawing the 53 is very good but this thread is more for less serious ideas

I am afraid a thumbs-down from me on 32/316 - loses basic links like Burnt Oak to Cricklewood; doesn't align with new N32 and so on.

Using DDs The only place in Tottenham I could think of a stand space is probably around Tottenham Town Hall or by the bus garage in Philip Lane. As for Tottenham Hale I'm not sure if there's a stand space there as it already has the 41, 76 and 192 standing there with the W4, 123 and 230 passing through
