From Saturday 9 September changes to some routes occurred due to major roadworks taking place at Manor Circus roundabout in Richmond.

Due to these works some structural changes to route R68 and R70 have taken place.

Route R68 is currently running between Hampton Court Station and Twickenham, York Street only. Route R70 now runs between Hampton, Nurserylands and Kew Retail Park.

Route R68 continues to run every 15 minutes between Hampton Court and Twickenham, York Street. If you need to travel between Twickenham and Kew Retail Park, please change to the R70 at stop H, named York Street/Twickenham, to continue your journey.

During this phase of the works, route R70 will not serve bus stop SC outside Sainsbury's on Manor Road in Richmond. For travel to/from Sainsbury's, passengers should either alight on Lower Mortlake Road or use bus route 371 instead (interchange can be made at Richmond station in both directions).

These works are due to finish sometime in the spring of 2024.

Reports received so far suggest that in the morning peak and afternoon school times passengers are unable to board the first bus along the Twickenham - Richmond leg "temporarily" abandoned by the R68.  The same is true in reverse during morning school and afternoon peak times with people left behind in Richmond and along the LOR to Twickenham.  

To say locals are not at all happy might be a polite under-statement not least given the amount of notice they never received of this change.  

I remain of the opinion that extra journeys on the 33 would help out and which can run Fulwell - East Sheen stand and back rather than the full route.  That or convert some of the 33 to deckers using the slack in the FW allocation.  

The R70 remains a very busy route and should be reviewed with a mind to uplifting to at least x6 bph.

Temporarily abandoned by the R68!

The situation on the ground is not surprising, can’t believe that TfL haven’t learnt lessons from closure of Hammersmith Bridge, residents of LB of Richmond are very vocal and will fight hard especially if their school children can’t get to school on time.

Extras on the 33 would make sense. This route has a higher pvr MF am as it has extra trips already. So keeping those buses out all day into the pm peak wouldn’t need a higher pvr but would provide a bit of slack.

Sat & Sun you could have extras running FW or Teddington to East Sheen Black Horse.

The situation on the ground is not surprising, can’t believe that TfL haven’t learnt lessons from closure of Hammersmith Bridge, residents of LB of Richmond are very vocal and will fight hard especially if their school children can’t get to school on time.

With reference to the 533 it was introduced at a wide headway as the demand was not known.  The headway has been cut significantly in response to demand using, IIRC, resources saved from cuts to the 209.  The latter really is a hiding to nothing now; Mortlake (garage site) to Castelnau shuttle taking only a few minutes and covered in its entirety by other more frequent routes.  In fairness the locals around Mortlake and Barnes have also been very vocal in demanding no loss of service other than the enforced walk across Hammersmith Bridge.  At least they can pick up a 72 at the north side now without having to walk all the way into Hammersmith.  

By contrast the 728 remains every 20 minutes and is very lightly used so demand for these "bridge replacement" services isn't at all certain in the planning stages.  

Demand along the Twickenham - Richmond corridor is known, however, and there should be no excuse for the level of cuts now being endured.  If the 33 was 'deckers it would help; there aren't enough spare to convert the full PVR but it should be possible to find enough to run a FW - East Sheen shuttle with all 'deckers at least 3bph.

As I am told the “issue” on the 33 with decker use is residents by the Castelnau stand, it seems perfectly sensible to implement decker shorts to aid the absence of the R68 as these will not need to serve the affected area.

On another note, it seems the 490 (already not the most reliable route out there) appears to have worsened reliability issues linked to the route changes. I was at Hatton Cross and there were no Richmond bound buses for some time, whilst the Heathrow bound service appeared bunched and it seemed as if buses were significantly delayed.

Richmond and Twickenham area was bad this morning.

Some buses on many routes were running around an hour late.

Tailbacks to the M3 and Hammersmith apparently. Complete gridlock.

Changes to buses from Saturday 30 September:

The temporary timetable on route 39 will be removed with the frequency of the service restored to run every 8 minutes during the daytime on Monday to Saturdays and every 12 minutes during the evening and all day on Sundays.

Route 42 will have a new timetable on all days of the week with minor changes to times. 

The temporary timetable on route 49 will be removed with the frequency of the service restored to run every 10 minutes during the daytime on Monday to Sundays and every 12 minutes during the evening on all days.

Route 51 will have a new timetable on all days of the week with journey times revised to better reflect current traffic levels.

The temporary timetable on route 74 will be removed with the frequency of the service restored to run every 10 minutes during the daytime on Monday to Saturdays and every 12 minutes during the evening and all day on Sundays.

A temporary timetable will be introduced on route 90 which will widen the frequency of the service to a bus every 11 minutes during the daytime on Monday to Saturdays and to every 16 minutes during the evening and all day on Sundays. This temporary change is to give buses more time to complete journeys during HS2 works on Mandeville Road.

A temporary timetable will be introduced on route 110 which will widen the frequency of the service to a bus every 17 minutes during the daytime on Monday to Saturdays and to every 22 minutes during the evening and all day on Sundays. This temporary change is to give buses more time to complete journeys during healthy streets works at Manor Circus roundabout.

Route 132 will have a new timetable on all days of the week with journey times revised to better reflect current traffic levels.

No change to the night service which will continue to run every 30 minutes on all nights of the week. This temporary change is to give buses more time to complete journeys during HS2 works on Horsenden Lane.

Route 298 will have a new timetable on all days of the week with journey times revised to better reflect current traffic levels.
