That doesn't mean that the Wimbledon section should suffer as a result and it picks up heavily from Battersea Power Station nowadays. The 77/87/344 are obviously busier northbound because they take people into Central London and the 436 won't do that. Where did I say the Wimbledon section should suffer? Linking back to the original idea that the 87/156 should be merged, of course not yours, but the point that its not as busy doesn't mean it should be changed

Aldwych to Wimbledon would be far too long a route.

Aldwych to Wimbledon would be far too long a route. However I do think that it’s a bit of a farce that Wimbledon doesn’t have a day time bus link to central London. Especially considering smaller towns do have central London bus links. Vauxhall and Battersea PS are in Zone 1 but sorry they don’t count. I do think the 156 does deserve to touch ‘proper’ central London. I’d truncate the 77 to Vauxhall and send the 156 up to Waterloo. Tooting Station, Earsfield and that stretch already has a central London link with the 44

Tooting Station, Earsfield and that stretch already has a central London link with the 44 That would break the St Thomas’ and Waterloo link that the 77 provides for Nine Elms which has been intact for decades. Wimbledon to Waterloo would be so slow and tedious and the trains are plentiful which is why I think no bus connects Wimbledon to Zone 1. Similarly in Tooting and Earlsfield people commuting into the city are more likely to take the train rather than waste their life on the 44 or 77 which terminate on the outskirts of Central London and take much longer

I was about to mention this, always have thought there would be potential of a link that goes further than Shepherd’s Bush, but I won’t hijack this thread to talk about it Extending the 7 to Ealing Broadway via the N7 has often been suggested before. But I think something covering part of the N207 could work well, particularly with the 427 now gone from Acton. While Ealing is well connected to Central London by train, this would improve connections from the Acton Vale area which doesn't have a station. Perhaps the 148 could divert at Lancaster Gate up to Paddington, then taking over the 36 to Queens Park - and the 36 curtailed to Paddington. This would better match capacity at the Queens Park end, while retaining links as far as Victoria. Then introduce a new route between Ealing Broadway and Marble Arch (using the proposed 94 stand near Selfridges, and the current E1 stand at Ealing).

Aldwych to Wimbledon would be far too long a route. Would it be any more reliable to swap termini with the 77? So a Waterloo-Wimbledon route and an Aldwych-Tooting route (both via Wandsworth Road)?

So a Waterloo-Wimbledon route and an Aldwych-Tooting route (both via Wandsworth Road)? Maybe but I can’t see why it would need to. If anything TfL should just cut the Aldwych to Trafalgar Square section to improve the 87 given how the Strand barely moves some days and that’s outside of rush hour. In fact I’m surprised TfL haven’t cut the 91 back to Aldwych and the 87 to Trafalgar Square to further reduce buses sat in traffic towards Trafalgar Square. There would still be plenty of links to either end and it’s not that far to walk.

That would negatively affect the 87s performance which makes no sense. Aldwych to Wimbledon would be far too long a route. Would it be any more reliable to swap termini with the 77? So a Waterloo-Wimbledon route and an Aldwych-Tooting route (both via Wandsworth Road)? Me personally I think this could work especially on the Waterloo-Wimbledon route, however I'm not sure if the Aldwych-Tooting section would be too much for reliability reasons. Guess the main issue with that corridor is there's not much South East to South West connections, which is generally lacking in London, hence the reason why so many people on here would like the 436 to be extended to Clapham Junction/Wandsworth however at the moment with the route ending at Battersea Park, between there and Vauxhall the loading there does dwindle compared to the rest of the route. Extending the route to Clapham Junction/Wandsworth will give it more purpose linking it to a mainline station and/or town centre and extending it down further into South West London however if this does happen right now there will be surplus capacity. As 4 routes plus a train line from Vauxhall to Clapham Junction is enough let alone 5 which will be overkill. Unless more demand comes which could happen due to housing, a change to one of the routes will need to be done. With the 156 being the sole one of these routes terminating at Vauxhall, this doesn't help plus with stand space in Vauxhall being full right now and changes planned to Vauxhall itself as well, it makes it an easy target for change proposals and for that reason logically makes more the most sense to change. But if you do change it then could cause a butterfly effect to the other routes around it, as the capacity would be shifted to other buses, let alone the reliability an extended 77/87 would have to face, even if an extended 436 will replace it as the routing will be different. However me personally I'm all for more links especially South East to South West ones, so if a change like this ever happens I won't be mad seeing it.

The Surrey Quays to Clapham Junction branch of the Overground is also frequently closed for engineering works, so duplicating the 156 and 344 seems to be a much more noticeable issue as you say. Could consider extending the 436 over the 156 to Clapham Junction, then send the 156 somewhere else for some new links? Or might an 87/156 merger work (going via Wandsworth Road)? Would be a similar length to the 77 - and has been mentioned the 156 gets busy between Wandsworth and Wimbledon, so could do with an frequency increase to match the 87. Or reroute the 156 via Falcon/Grant Road and then take over the C3 route to Earls Court and extend the 436 from Battersea Park via the 156 to Clapham Junction.

Loads of places in the Z3/4 region are missing them. Barking, Gants Hill, Beckton, Leytonstone, Wanstead etc All places from where the tube provides a service to Central London that is infinitely quicker and more convenient than a bus route in today’s traffic conditions could ever hope to. Plus with TfL’s financial situation they cannot afford to duplicate tube lines with bus routes, there simply isn’t the money to offer that level of choice.

When the 3 was removed from Whitehall in the consultation I was slightly surprised the 87 didn't take the Horesguards stand.
