The driver is off line of route as well as should of been using Sunny Bank At first glance, and without wishing to prejudice anything, I can't understand why the driver took this road. It's a very obvious low bridge as well,

The driver will be sacked there's no excuse for that.
Even if that london buses sign wasn't there he wouldave had the iBus warning and should'ave known a 14.6 bus won't go under a 12ft bridge.

Pay peanuts you get monkeys. It's nothing to do with pay, some people just don't have the capacity upstairs to pay attention when driving. Sadly this seems to be a very difficult thing to pre-test for.

Don't know how that driver thought going under that would be ok. It does look like a very low bridge and like others have said iBus gives a warning anyway. I hope the passengers are ok.
As for the future of this unit, its a relatively young bus being an Enviro 400. Probably won't be worth rebuilding the roof cost wise but it would make a great candidate now as an open top tourist bus with a relatively young driveline. Give it time and it'll probably show up at TOLST, Golden Tours, City Sightseeing or the likes. I can see it being quite desirable.

As I mentioned in the Arriva thread where there was discussion about this incident last night, the driver has no excuse as there are not one but three signs warning of the bridge - two TfL signs and a road sign telling overheight vehicles to turn right into Manor Road to avoid the bridge.

What a horrific sight. The driver deserves all what he gets from this, there are no excuse for this to happen. I hope the injured passengers have a swift recovery.
This is a major story on news outlets right now.

! I hope everyone was ok!! I heard this first on Capital FM. i wish those 7 injured a speedy recovery Sadly, T59 was the victim. One of the only decent T's at TC. It will be repaired though, because when T63 got deroofed a couple of years ago, it was repaired, and its also one of the 466's buses Why was the driver heading heading that way when the 197 didn't go there?? Im sure disciplinary action will be taken against him.

Portland road is actually part of the 197 route, the driver should have turned right into Manor Road immediately prior to the bridge.
It's not the first time a 197 has hit that bridge either... food for thought!
As for the reason why the driver did not turn right... Who knows! Let's not speculate too early, driver could have been distracted maybe..? Taken ill..? But as its states there have been injuries, thankfully not very serious, so out of respect for that I'd suggest we refrain from further speculation (mod hat on there).
At the end of the day there is an ongoing investigation by TFL/Arriva and the police too and over time they will find out what actually happened..
One thing I will say though is that if the driver is completely at fault the police alone will throw the book at them as a bridge strike falls under driving without due care and attention.

I hope no-one was seriously injured. The seats are eerily intact here... Open-top bus for Boris' Mayoral campaign?
Looks like a 200 from this perspective.

The other bus to hit that bridge was DW12 in 2008. That took 4 months to repair. Capital FM now say TFL have launched its investigation into the incident. The driver hasn't been arrested as far as i know.
